Seeing kids with the chickies is one of my favorite things ever! I love to take a fresh hatch with us when we visit the grandkids! The ones that are due to hatch then are ameraucanas and will lay blue eggs with a hint of green. Perfect chicks for easter! I only have about 10 in there but they are not spoken for yet.

I also have a few BCM eggs in there but not sure they are fertile. I threw them in there for a fertility check. I will candle them in 3 days and will know then if they are viable or not. My BCMs lay really dark, HUGE, speckled eggs. They are very creamy and are fantastic in desserts and custards!

I also have a hatch due this tuesday. EEs, Ameraucanas and BCMs. Not sure how many BCMs I'll have left though.

Ended up dropping almost a foot of snow out where we live, not as much in town though. its been melting all morning though so now its a nice muddy mess.

the chicks are already getting bigger! man they grow fast. and my EE's, which are only a week older than my Australorps, i can't believe how much bigger they are, and they are already starting to get feathers on their wings!

Well the new coop is well underway.

I've dubbed it "The Poultry Palace"

Still need to build the expanded run though.

I really need to get the new birds out of the brooder - they're getting way too big for it - same problem you are having aubreynoramarie! Mine are about 8 weeks now and even though they are split between a couple of 100 gallon stock watering tanks it's getting awfully crowded.

Sunny- Sign me up for four chicks please
smile.png
. I'd love two of each if the BCM eggs turn out to be fertile (if not, four ameraucanas would be lovely)! Let me know when they hatch on the 23rd and I'll be happy to run out and pick them up from you. Yay!

Genny-I need to take a new picture of your little black mystery chick to post. She is turning into a rather unique looking chicken...we love her!

Ron-Looks like your coop is coming along nicely, I'm impressed!

...Would you mind sharing what you've done with the Home Depot bucket in the run? My husband is wanting to create some larger, homemade feeders and waterers and those buckets were part of his plan. I'm just so clueless as to the fabrication of all this stuff...any tips for us?

Hope everybody is doing well. With any luck, Spring will return in the next couple of weeks! I've lived here for the past 20+ years, but for some reason our ridiculous transition seasons never cease to amaze (and disappoint) me...

Happy Weekend,
Stacy

Hi Ron. I recognized the Home Depot feeder(waterer?) immediately too. That's what we did. Coop looks great can't wait to see it done!

Great pics Jeeper! I love it when you all post pics of your birds! Needless to say I am a happy camper lately.

Genny how much snow did you end up with? It never stuck down here (except for a little freezing rain for a couple of hours). It was pretty nice today. I'll be happier when I can wear flip flops again!

Aubrey, love the story about Midge. That is sooo sweet! We need updated pics.

Thank you! I have 9 left from last year, and 15 new ones that are 8 weeks old this year. That's why I needed a bigger coop & run. I'm keeping the smaller coop & run to use for the new ones until they are a little larger, then I will use it for breeding, isolation, etc.

Thanks Stacy and Sunny! I'm just using the Home Depot bucket with a galvanized metal feeder. It fits over the top perfectly, which keeps the rain/snow out of the feed. The feeder holds up to 40 lbs. - though I only put half of a 50 lb. bag in there at a time.

Ah! I assumed homemade feeder.

Stacy, DH and I made a homemade feeder out of the same type of bucket with a large plant saucer screwed to the bottom. We took a butterfly drill bit and drilled 4, one and a half inch wide holes in the sides, at the bottom about an inch up. The plant saucer is 4 inches wider than the bottom of the bucket to catch the feed. If you use pellets make the holes at least 2" wide. Note, I attached a cone (inverted funnel) to the lid of my feeder to keep the birds from roosting on the top and pooping in the feed. Just used duct tape and wrapped it under the lid. That way you can still pull the lid off to easily fill the feeder and the top keeps the feed clean and dry.
