Nevadans?

An update on my Serama eggs. out of a total of 28 eggs in all. there are only 9 still in my incubator. of those I only have good feelings about 2. the others simply did not show any signs I should toss them. two are at day 13 and one is nearly completely dark and looking as I would expect. the other looks like it developed a chick for a while but then quit. these eggs where started in my first incubator and I had trouble with temps for the first week in that one. of the second batch of 14 eggs I took out 6 today. all where non starters period. of the other 7 I have mixed feelings about. maybe clouded by a touch of discouragement at the moment but I will get over it and be able to make a clearer decision concerning them. The two eggs from the first batch go into lock down on sunday. I will candle all the eggs again at that time and see what I have left. So far I have opened every egg I removed just to make sure I am not making any mistakes. so fr I am 100% at picking bad eggs. guess it takes one to know one eh.

(I mean the comment about the bad egg only)
Sorry you are not having better luck with your hatches Penturner! I have never had good luck with shipped eggs either.

o.k. so I would like to know if everyone agrees that it is better to take out the eggs your thinking are not developing? Is that factual that a bad egg will affect the growth of viable eggs?????

OK, I finally finished the bumpout on the coop that is now the convertible brooder. It's huge! The 4 week old chicks that were inside the house, in the small brooder (a large, converted rabbit hutch) have just been moved in and they don't seem to know what to do with all the room! They are all huddled in one corner of the brooder and though they looked huge to me before I put them in now they look so small in this huge space.

Here's the brooder...

HorseFeatherz here are your babies. Aren't they getting big?

Yea, it's possible that a bad egg could explode contaminating the other eggs. Doesn't happen a lot but why take a chance?

Well 5 of them are supposed to be BC marans but the coloring is not quite right and the other 5 are EEs and Blue Orp crosses from HorseFeatherz. The Blue Orp crosses are just gorgeous! You should see their feathers in natural light. They have a dark blue/grey edge to each feather that is so unique, layered on top of a very pale silvery blue. Really gives each feather depth. I just love them! I know the legs look green on all of them but that is my camera's fault (well my fault for not setting it correctly). Their legs are actually slate colored except for the EEs that really do have green colored legs.

Like the new convertible brooder too! Nice job!

Penturner...that so sucks! Good luck on those remaining eggs. It only takes a few real good ones, right?!?

Sunny, it looks good. Sweet Babies. I also got the joke without needing explainin. Flowers, I think it is best to remove them mainly because they where all known to have bacteria in them. the other questionable ones I left in. My thinking is that the bacteria did not start out inside the egg and may not necessarily stay inside the egg. It might go looking for fresh hunting grounds. That and the risk of an explosion taking out all the eggs.

That looks fantastic Sunny - lots of room for those chicks (atleast for now

) they sure seem to grow fast.

I leave all eggs in until lockdown, then take out the clears (I always have a sad hope that they will start at sometime

of course they never do).

Penturner - sorry about your eggs. Shipped eggs do poorly for me too, but I still try - the only way to get quality birds that one wants in this area, well a person could also drive to the east coast to get birds

. If you want to practice hatch with local eggs, let me know.
