I'm afraid I'm adding a lot more than I'm spreading! Now I'm thinking maybe a couple of australorps might be cool but then all of my marans are black copper so more black hens might be too much of one color.

I just realized that in spring I am adding about 50 birds to my flock and they are all from BYCers!!! (so far anyway)
Wow BYC has turned into a lot more than an information resource for me!

I think you're right, Sunny! At least you've got lots of space now.

So I'm thinking about taking the leap and naming my chickens. I don't know why it's taken me so long. Part of the issue is not being able to tell them apart within breed. Of course, the EEs are unique enough to tell apart and I recognize the smallest BA and the smallest BR but that's even getting more challenging as they are catching up. The welsummers all look identical as do the other 4 BA. maybe i can try different color zip ties.

Oooh, getting sleepy early for a change. Gonna get off here and catch a snooze before I get my second wind. Good night all!

Elizabeth, Im surprised the little ones havent given silly names to the chickens yet! Ill tell ya, 24 names will be hard to come up with, but sheesh i guess ive done it. One of the red frizzles got named french fry. yep, im running short on names.

That sounds like a great idea! Just leave them loose enough for them to grow into. I have a naming thread on here somewhere that got a bunch of responses, plus I posted links to more naming sites. Here's the link... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=393815

Hi there!

I'm in Vegas and also have a 8 x 10 shed in my "Bird Pen". I think it works great - but it does get a little warm in the summer. I'm looking for a way to cover the roof with something that would help deflect the sun next summer... meanwhile I got creative and removed on "panel" from each side of the shed so that more air can move thru. That helped alot. 'Course that only works if your shed is enclosed in your pen.

My floor is plywood... and I just try to keep straw or grass (from my neighbor when he mows his lawn

on the floor and I try to pick up any big "poo bombs" daily if I can... I have my nest boxes and a couple places for them to roost (tho most of them prefer to be outside to roost). Oh - we did build a little "poo-catcher" under the roosts to contain some of the mess and keep them from walking in it.

And here's the weirdest thing I do! My neighborhood is known for having "roof rats", so I got creative and put a Legal-size 4 drawer Filing Cabinet in the shed to store their feed and a few other things. It works GREAT!! I love it! I took some empty feed bags, cut the tops off, roll the edges down a couple times and set the bags in the drawer. I can fit at least 3 of these in one drawer. Then I just fill them up with feed! It takes up less space than trash cans, keeps everything clean and definitely keeps the mice/rats out!

Well, that's my 2 cents worth! Hope you can find something useful in my ramblings!

God bless!
