Nevadans?

Our faverolles lay medium-size, so I just don't use the eggs for baking recipes. But my 12-year-old son scrambles them up... he could care less about size as long as his belly is full. The EEs and marans just sound fun, even if they're not as productive... they're great pets that also help with the food budget, so I'm happy with it.

We do want docile chickens, though, partly because we live so close to downtown and partly because my son is autistic. All of our animals have to be docile, even our big lovable mutts.

We started with 2 Delawares and 3 faverolles that we got from Green's Feed in April. One of the Delawares turned out to be a rooster, but the other doesn't quite rule the docile faverolles because she's outnumbered. In the spring we're going to concentrate on layers, but I'm going to get a silkie pullet just because I want one. Otherwise we want RI Reds, australorps, easter eggers, black copper marans (only one... those chicks are expensive!), wyandottes, a buff brahma, and a Plymouth rock. I already have four clients (I'm a massage therapist) asking to buy my extra eggs, but 4 hens isn't quite enough for our family yet.

I'm a mile from downtown, in the old southwest (now Midtown.) I swear there's at least one house keeping chickens every 3 blocks in this neighborhood.

glad you found us! I may have a couple australorp pullets to sell in late Feb/early March, if you're interested. They will start laying about then. I have 25 9 week old chicks--6 of which are australorps. I will keep a few but would like to sell some to make room for some different breeds. They are from ideal hatchery. Anyway, good luck with your flock expansion plans!

Elizabeth, I'm interested. Thank you. Australorps are first on my husband's wishlist. They're black australorps, right? (I'm not aware of any other colors... my husband wants a few black ones, but there are so many breeds that if these aren't black I have more options.)

I can provide for them now... it'll give me a good focus until I can start gardening again. But I know that everyone has a different outlook on their babies and some want to find a permanent home. But I'm sure I can find a home for a silkie rooster.

If you do decide to rehome them, please let me know. I can pick them up.

very cool! I have 14 chicks in my grow-out room right now so making space for them is always nice. They are a week and a half old right now so they will need to be under heat still and they are from ideal hatchery so i honestly have no idea what quality they will be when they grow up. What I do know is that silkies are infamous for being the most docile breed ever! Theyre free if ya want em

I work a swing schedule so just check with me whenever you wanna come get em and ill let you know what my schedule is like

You might want an older pullet then. The marans seem to go through a flighty phase at a few weeks of age then mellow out after that. Although I did have one marans hen once that was a little grumpy (when brooding anyway) even when she was older.

But if that happened we would just let you exchange her for a mellow girl.

Thank you! I still have the heat lamps and baby feeders from the last chicks. I'm self-employed, so my schedule is very flexible. We can IM contact information.

(Woohoo 10th post! Now to customize the profile...)

I'm afraid I'm adding a lot more than I'm spreading! Now I'm thinking maybe a couple of australorps might be cool but then all of my marans are black copper so more black hens might be too much of one color.

I just realized that in spring I am adding about 50 birds to my flock and they are all from BYCers!!! (so far anyway)
Wow BYC has turned into a lot more than an information resource for me!

Thank you. This really helps calm my worries about spending so much on a chick that I really REALLY want. Will the flightiness be such an issue if she's growing up with 8 or so that are within a few weeks of the same age, in a very generous living space? I'm more worried about aggressiveness than anything... autistic kids don't react well when attacked.
