Nevadans?

Hey all! Ron I wish Steve and I could have watched we need to learn how to process birds as well. We are very interested in getting turkeys too. Maybe for next year. Good to know the Utube video was that helpful. Let us know how he tastes! I've been so unhappy with the quality of meat in the supermarkets lately. We need to buy a freezer and start buying straight from the local farms.

Seth that coop is perfect for 6 chickens! It would be a lot cheaper to build it though.

Sorry but wouldn't the asiatic birds (or anything outside of American standards) be part of the continental classes as well?

Aubrey, sorry you had to pass up that great shed! That stinks.

New here...

Sorry if I don't quite have the forum protocol down yet... I'm still trying to get my 10th post so I can update my profile.
Hi, I've lived in Reno for 14 years. This is my first year owning urban chickens, though I grew up with chickens as a major food source in backwoods Idaho. We have 4 hens but are going to buy 10 more chicks in the spring.

I've noticed there are a LOT of Reno people on here.

Anyway, nice to meet you!

Yes the Reno folks have been the most chatty lately although we have folks on here from all over the state. Don't worry, we don't have the forum protocol all the way down ourselves yet. What kind of chickens do you have now and what are you getting in Spring?

I will add your name to the opening post now.

We started with 2 Delawares and 3 faverolles that we got from Green's Feed in April. One of the Delawares turned out to be a rooster, but the other doesn't quite rule the docile faverolles because she's outnumbered. In the spring we're going to concentrate on layers, but I'm going to get a silkie pullet just because I want one. Otherwise we want RI Reds, australorps, easter eggers, black copper marans (only one... those chicks are expensive!), wyandottes, a buff brahma, and a Plymouth rock. I already have four clients (I'm a massage therapist) asking to buy my extra eggs, but 4 hens isn't quite enough for our family yet.

I'm a mile from downtown, in the old southwest (now Midtown.) I swear there's at least one house keeping chickens every 3 blocks in this neighborhood.

We have quite a few folks on here that sell eggs if you have customers waiting. I used to but I am rebuilding right now and don't have any of laying age yet. I will be breeding Black Copper Marans this year and may have a pullet for sale this spring. I give a discount to local BYCers. Remind me in Spring and I'll see what I can do for you.
