I don't know if I shared my hatching experience here before but after 4 days of babysitting hatching chicks, up every two hours because the temp and humidity wouldn't stay consistant, I took a sleeping pill and said whatever happens, happens. I woke up in excruciating pain in my knee...I don't know how but I must have gotten up to check on them and tripped over my dog that sleeps next to the bed or going up the stairs, but I broke my tibia!!! Was on crutches for 3 weeks! I sold that incubator on Craigslist as soon as the last chick hatched!!!

The good part was my house was spotless, like right before I went in labor with my kids, I was nesting and cleaned my house top to bottom! My husband thought maybe I shouldn't have sold the incubator, he liked the clean house!

Does anyone have the intel on who to ask and which days to go, if we want pallets?

On the subject of recycled materials, last year we learned how to make self-watering gardens out of 5-gallon buckets, and for 2 months it was my husband's job to stop by Whole Foods on the way home and check the bucket corner. We grew 30lbs of potatoes, at least 30lbs of squash, 6 tomato plants, 8 pepper plants, and enough lettuce and swiss chard for the whole year, on our driveway! So this year he's on bucket watch again, before the rest of the gardeners key in to it.

I'm sure he'll be just thrilled to be on pallet watch too!
(Just kidding, he supports all of my manic hobbies because he gets the freshest home cooking around. And the whole family has accepted the "you help, you eat" rule.)

(the clean house comment not the broken tibia)

Aubrey save those pallets! We will need them. Even the smaller pieces of wood will come in handy for nest boxes, corbels and supports.

Kim keep a watch out for more pallets! You'll need them too when spring comes. We will put a notice out on the CA thread for help from folks in your area. Hows the hatch going?

Missy we asked at HD about pallets and they said they don't break them down here and toss them. There is a company in Reno that pays for them and they recycle the ones in decent shape and combine pieces from the others to make decent pallets then they sell the recycled pallets back to businesses. Later I worked at a shipping Co near the airport and found that recycling Co. They have gazillions of those pallets stacked up to the sky. I always meant to stop by and ask for any pieces they couldn't use but never did make it by.

Just be careful guys. I used to work for a trucking company and we would constantly have people drive onto our lot and load up their trucks with our stacks of pallets. Unfortunately most businesses with massive stacks of pallets that look like they aren't being used usually are and it's illegal to take them. We have had to prosecute people for trespassing and theft because pallets do cost more than one might think.

Anywhoo just make sure to ask wherever you're getting them from. Don't ever just assume that they're laying out back and not being used. Trucking and warehouse companies are usually the most grouchy about their pallets being taken. A lot of the "pallet recyclers" get their hands on stolen pallets (men drive around in trucks all day taking loads of them then selling them for WAYYYYYYYY cheap) and sell them for a profit.

There are places out there though who genuinely don't care about extra pallets though. Just always be sure to ask!

48 hours?!! How do you do that? I went three days in a row once (I mean after the teen years, when caffeine was a very good friend of mine) and I was literally insane! I mean I scared the crap out of myself I was so out of it! NOT a pretty picture!

Yes we definitely need to spend a weekend there once the weather warms up a bit. That Pass is super scary when it's this cold. Just the low clouds create enough moisture for black ice to form. Until then you need to grab all the supplies you can so we have something to work with!

Oh shoot Sheryl! Dang it! We completely forgot too. All that good food sated us and we never thought about the eggs again.
Folks this lady can COOK! Her DH makes a mean steak too! Yu-um! I do need to get those eggs though.

My house is thrashed and has been since about a month after my husband died. Come and visit. I have 3 bators running, don't know why, I only have a handful of eggs, and you can watch and clean!

I need a storage shed, but just so I can stop paying for a storage unit. That $140 I could be using for bills. I so need to find a place that actually has things like big closets, linen closets, whatever. And cabinet space in this kitchen?? And you can't get in the fridge if someone is cooking. Most of my kitchen stuff is still in storage caise I can fit what I even have here. Not one cast iron and nothing bigger than maybe a 2 quart pot. Man I miss having a real house and not a cracker box. There wasn't even a medicine cabinet or any place to put anything in my bathroom when we moved in. I bought a really cheap medicine cabinet and Bill put that up just till we figured something else out in there. No counters, no nothing. Pain in the Patooty.
