Nevadans?

I just got an eMail today from the local bee guy. They are taking early orders for their starter kits. I really need to get started with bees this year - I think it will make my gardening much more successful. With the Chavez alfalfa ranch and the Carson River so close to me, I don't think they will have any problem finding enough pollen. (Sigh) So many projects, so little time...

I see more and more people returning to that way of thinking. Or maybe I just run in the right circles.

Good to hear!!!

Sorry Elizabeth, I forget how hard it is to tell tone when reading text. I was totally joking about the haircut analogy! That's why I posted the laughing smilie. I often go off on tangents like that when I'm tired and they rarely make sense, even to me, but I'm not trying to make sense. Ok that sounds really retarded now that I say it out loud. How kind you all are for ignoring my ramblings.

I really need to remember that some people actually listen to what I'm saying.

Not joking about the large orders getting a couple of runt plants thrown in though. I was in manufacturing for too many years to not know this happens all the time. It is hard to resist when you are trying to fill a large order and you are running out of premium specimens. I kept moving to a new flip and each time I would place huge orders to try to fill up the ugly bare spots. A lot of their plants are perfect for our western alkaline soils so they were my go-to nursery for easy care plants. I guess when you order that often you are bound to get a dud now and then. (very tired, still not sure of what I'm rambling on about... just ignore me, I'll crash soon).

I was wondering if you had done this yet. What happened to the guy that wanted to store his bees on your property? Free bees sound even better! I would love to have honey bees.

OK this dumb little story that Missy brought to mind keeps repeating in my head so I'm just gonna type it out.

When I was very young and new to gardening I planted a mess of pumpkins! I had no idea that pumpkin plants would take over the whole garden, the lawn and the carport of my apartment complex, but live and learn. Well one day I was out weeding the pumpkin plants and I noticed that a few of the flowers had little tiny globes at the bases! Oh my gosh I was sooo excited!!! Then I noticed these "other" flowers, in the middle of each plant, that were very tall and showy but had no fruiting of any kind and weren't even on the "vine" part of the plant. "Well" I thought to myself, "these flowers are doing no good at all and are probably just sucking energy from the fruiting flowers". So I went upstairs and got a pair of scizzors and proceeded to give my pumpkin plants a good trimming. I was a little over halfway done with the job when my brain decided to finally work and it suddenly dawned on me that I was cutting off all of the male flowers!!!

It's a good thing that a little pollen goes a long way. I still had a bumper crop of pumpkins.

Oops! Almost forgot! Love the pics! Your girls aren't far away from laying age are they? Or am I remembering their ages wrong?

I know you were joking, Sunny! I guess my joking tone didn't come across in type either. Yep, my girls should be laying soon. They are 16 weeks, which reminds me, I need to get going on the nest boxes. the time has flown by. It seemed like I wouldn't need those for ages. I'll work on building those this week. well, i need to get myself to bed. ho hum, not looking forward to work tomorrow.

It's the same guy. I never got around to talking to him about that last year. I may try to do both. I figure he can teach me what I need to know while he is out tending to his bees.
