Nevadans?

Guess who just got a pair of bantam SLW this guy!!!!!!!!
Cool. Congrats.
Quote: I have been looking into these auto doors for awhile. They all seem a little delicate to me. We have coyotes, mountain lions, etc, etc. I want something rugged that once closed is super secure and I agree with Seth and Missy, no exposed wires or machinery that can be chewed by rodents, pecked by chickens or fouled by poo or dust. I'd be very interested in an automatic system but would hope it could be set to shut or open on a timer as well as the phone. :) I'd be one of the first in line to purchase a quality product for auto door opening and closing if it were sturdy and reliable. I don't really care if it slides up and down in a track or swings out and up or down. All of my pop doors are situated on the leeward side of the coops. I just don't want it closing accidentally before all the chickens are in.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! Everything you said was totally stuff I was thinking! I was skeptical about making something quality for so inexpensive but my friend certainly thinks it can be done and is confident that the ones on the market are ridiculously overpriced for what you're actually paying for. This is gonna be a really fun project I can't wait. Thanks all!!

Hey guys! Id like to get serious for a moment and talk to you about something.

So I met with a woman today who raises chickens here in town. She had a raccoon attack her flock at 9pm the other night and kill some of her birds. Knowing that htis is something Ive had a problem with before she contacted me about a product that her husband had invented called the Pinnoccio. Pinoccio is a device that communicates to a machine via wifi or cellular, ex your iphone. They built this machine using the pinnoccio kind of like a robot as their prototype that could be controlled by someone from across the country via their iphone.

We have talked before about how our lives revolve around being home at a certain time every night to lock up the birds before it gets dark and they become unsafe. How we cannot take vacations because of the worry involved with fidning someone willing to come to the house twice a day to unlock/lock up the birds.

My friend owns her own business which is actually helping people start up their own businesses. What We want to do is get me into my own business geared towards the new trend in having suburban flocks. We want to use her husbands technology to invent a device that would allow you to open and close your chicken coop door from anywhere through your iphone. For example i will be working at 5:30 am and mark works at six which means the chickens will have to be let out too early. Hopefully our prototype will allow me to let the birds out around 9am through an app in my phone. Now we realize that solar powered openers and timed openers exist, but we think we can create the entire device and door for a fraction of the cost...think 50 dollars as opposed to 200-300 dollars based on an amazing bulk product discount her husband gets for materials because of the development of his invention.

another pro we are gearing towards is that we want to be able to market the product towards people like myself who are terrified by the thought of putting things together and building them. We want simple installation instructions, with full functionability.

I will be going to a convention type thing to pitch our idea to designers and engineers who can hopefully help us build a website and prototype. I think there will be a market for this product, and my friend has been doing this a while and has seen people come up with some terrible ideas, but she thinks they will choose this one without a doubt. If it is chosen we will be eligible for business startup grants and all sorts of things that can help us get this out there to the community and hopefully help us all get some of our lives back without worrying about those ****** raccoons!!!!

Anyway the first step for me is meeting with and talking to people about what they would like to see in a product like this. How do you like your doors to open? How would you like to see functionability maintained? What materials would you like to see? Would you buy this product? do you see it making your life easier? things like that...i need to get some feedback to present to the engineers and designers.

Id love if you guys got in on this project with me!

I love the idea but if you do some search you'll see there is already people who have instructions on youtube and websites. I found all this when we were deciding which automatic door to go with. That's when I found ways to make your iphone control the time and you could open and close it whenever you wanted and from where ever you are. BUT, I haven't seen it marketed in a simple commercial product. I'd love to see this done. I don't see why it hasn't been done before anyway. I've had a camera system at my store that I can log into from anywhere for years now. In November when we were in Hawaii I was laying on the beach, logged into my computer showing the girls how to do something! Technology is crazy good! Make sure you get a legal contract with the details of the profits split, what percentage of the company belongs to who, who is required to do what, etc. Partnerships are tough to make work. Good luck Aubrey!

Aubreynoramarie, I would probably want for their to maybe be a webcam on the inside of the door so you could count chicken heads.
Americanvalkiry, please excuse the mispelling of your name, those are such cute baby bunnies!

Website? Any Ideas? If I we all pitch in, then I could whip one up pretty easily. I`m a techie
