Nevadans?

We won't go permanently until sometime in 2014. In the meantime it'll be a vacation home. Yes, it is the Land of Enchantment....we fell in love with it. (Heck, it's 109 here in Las Vegas now. Detroit probably looks attractive) (my apologies to those enamored with the Motor City)

We spent part of this last vacation in Santa Fe. Love that town. That was a spot on our list of possible places to live, but the water situation there is nearing impossible and in Corrales the city of Albuquerque is right next door for good work prospects. Corrales is down on the Rio Grande and all the wells perc well.

I think in the garden and orchard of this particular house was the first time I had ever seen a gooseberry bush! The house comes with a greenhouse attached. Apparently the first owner/builder was a chef and philanthropist and he grew his fresh herbs in there year-round. I counted at least five different kinds of fruit trees (apple, cherry, peach, pear, plum) and a small vineyard....no idea if table or wine grapes. The garden got me...that and the kitchen. Wow!

At this juncture I would like to thank my dear departed mother for helping to make all this possible. She would be tickled because she didn't cook AT ALL and had me taking cooking lessons when I was in 2nd grade. Don't know if she was trying to make me into a Stepford daughter, but I l-o-v-e to cook and the kitchen is the first place I look in a house and determines whether I'll look further. I have always wanted two ovens. And my personal philosophy is that you shouldn't go backwards when you move otherwise it feels like camping (well, to me the kitchen and cooking, anyway). This is what that sort of early indoctrination will get ya. I don't ever intend to move again as this place is Nirvana.
any outdoor pictures?

You need a permanent house guest and I volunteer!!! I love to cook and have worked as one, so just the kitchen alone and I would be there. OK, I should clarify. I love to cook when I have a decent kitchen. I don't at all right now, so that would be Heaven for me.

See? I'm not the only kitchen snob. :)

Since we're in escrow the nifty listing photos have gone away from the real estate sites, so here's what I could scrounge.

More kitchen and a view of the Sandia Mountains (Sandia is "watermelon" in Spanish, so-called because it turns an amazing shade of pink at sunset)

Area where the coop would go. It's out in the vegetable yard. Note part of grape trellis on left. The tree on right is not one of the orchard trees but is a fruit tree:

Backyard and back porch area. The dogs will think they've died and gone to dog park heaven....

Anyone have their birds become friends with wild birds? I have seen a pair of quail next to my coop for a few days now.
Quail hang out by my pens all the time, but I think they're just looking for the scratch and feed that occasionally spill outside.

Hey guys! Very exciting news. DH & I went on a vacation and got a BIG souvenir. We're in the throes of escrow now on and you can be sure I checked and double-checked if chickens are allowed. (They are!) Coop would go out by the veggie garden. It's got a mega well, so lots of irrigation for the orchard and small vineyard and lawns. We're rather stoked because this was one of those "in your dreams" homes that I lusted after on-line (an actual cookbook chef/philanthropist had built it and its monster kitchen) that was priced waaaaay out of reach...but the present-day elderly owners bought a house in CA closer to their kids/grandkids and didn't want to continue paying mortgage/gardener/staging fees. They had dropped the price drastically (still in the uncomfortable zone) and we bid a ways under what the next major price reduction would've been. It was accepted. Wow!

It's a bit of an older home (30 years), but all the bells and whistles and move-in ready....not like some of those "Yep, we've got projects!" houses we had toured that would've needed renovation or didn't quite fit.

Guess who's going to become a major hatchaholic now? AND an actual garden.... Ahhhh...... At last.

Congratulations Dee! That's an awesome looking/sounding place. I've always liked New Mexico, too. Unfortunately, the pictures from the post before this one aren't showing. It just says "No Image Available" in a placeholder.

Hello all, it has been a while. I actually do stop by and see what folks are up to from time to time. I just don't have time to post much.
I have spent the last year keeping bees. The chickens not so much any more. They cost far to much to justify keeping them here in town.

Anyway I wanted to let you all know that after a year our first honey is coming in. Pure local honey is hard to find. And we do nto have a lot of it or do we expect to get a lot of it. maybe a couple hundred lbs this year from 3 maybe 4 hives. Iwanted to give the folks I know fist shot at getting some as well as give you the chance to tell any of your honey eating friends about it. We pricve it at $6.00 (going rate right now is $8) no matter the volume. We have 1 lb bottles that we added the cost of the jar to for $7. We will also fill a jar you supply and charge just the weight of the honey.

I also was wondering what ever happened with the farmers market idea from last year. I was thinking I could throw in some bottles of honey with that effort if it ever got off the ground.

Anyway nice to see you all. a lot of new faces in this thread. Welcome to everyone.
