we're trying one of those up side down things so they can grow inside this year, and its working really great. im so excited! but i have that tallent for seeing something in a store then going home and creating a red neck version, so ive already rigged up a couple more for squash and strawberries. ha! beat yah, weather.

I keep seeing those in catalogs. I should sew some up. I have plenty of commercial grade landscape fabric left. You think they would work for zucchini?

How about corn?

Well we have had top bid for a new Serama Roo for the last 3 days. Fuego is not getting the job done yet and could take another year to do so. Heilo has laid 20 eggs or so that are just going to waste. So we decided to find a Roo that was proven fertile. So in about an hour the auction ends on a rooster that will cost us over $100. Now what do you suppose Heilo did? She went Broody yesterday. Now all she does is set on her nest with this last weeks eggs in it. Fuego is now wondering around the pen all lonely and upset. We has all been going out and spending time with him. We have three 8 week old chicks that we have been putting in the pen each day, but they sort of stay in a little group of their own. So now the situation has turned to finding him company while she hatches eggs. I have been careful to make sure all our birds have companions but this one caught me by surprise. I didn't realize he would get so lonely if she went broody. He is making attempts to approach the younger chicks so I really hope they start being better company for him.

Maybe they are missing one (or 27)? One has three leg bands - two on one leg, one on the other (pink/orange, black and white - I believe are the colors). Same-ish color as the others but more refined looking (almost elegant). Today was the second day I have seen her/him.

You're so cute Genny! An aristrocratic pigeon. I can totally picture him/her, strutting among the common folk, slumming it for a few days, just for fun...

Penturner, good luck with the new roo. If you get him post pics so we can all see what he looks like. Never spent $100 on a pet but cummulatively...? Well probably best to not dwell on how much my hobby costs me all together.

Poor Fuego! Maybe you can discourage Heilo's broodiness 'til you get a new roo for her?

Oops, correction! It now looks like 1 of my silvers is a boy. Tiny comb but his coloring is so much more white and black (very pronounced) that I did some more research on-line. Yep the boys have very pronounced silver/white and black color and the girls have silver/black at hackles but brownish mixed in with these colors on their bodies.

Genny, how is that little lavender chick doing? Or not so little by now I bet. Can you tell if your babies are roos or pullets yet? My blacks are about 50/50. I think my wheatons are female and the silvers are shown above.

Sunny, My 8 week old Silver Sebright has started crowing. I'm probably going to have to find a home for him. Waiting to see how loud he gets. My pens are made to help sound not carry but they can also pearch above the sound barrier. So you know that is the only place they want to be when they crow.
We are letting Heilo set on her eggs (at least some of them) but I don't think they are fertile. The break will allow Fuego to mature more and give her a break from egg production. I am not sure but this may also be the end of her laying season anyway.

We lost the Auction my $16.00. I am actually surprised I was able to value the Roo that close. Now I am wondering if we could not be shopping for a second hen or two. Fuego had gone in the coop early last night and I went out to check on him. he heard me coming and ran out to see me. I set with him for a while, Then my daughter came out and held him. I got him some meal worms which made him happy for a while. If I had one or two more hens I don't think it would be a problem. Note to self, No more pairs. Trios or better.

Anyone in the Reno area that is interested in meal worms, let me know. I started a culture 12 weeks ago and am going to be buried in worms soon. I make you a good deal! I also have beetles that are laying eggs I could stand to thin out. let me know if you are interested in starting a culture of your own. I can give you all the info you need on it etc. Anyway I let 1000 worms turn to beetles. that is a production of about 50,000 worms a week lol. just a couple more than I can use.

Sorry you lost the auction. From what I've read the hen to rooster ratio should be anywhere from 1-7 or up to 1-15. So you can get a lot more hens and still be fine. When you have more roos than that they are more likely to fight with each other and to run the poor hens into the ground.

Crowing at only 8 weeks. Wow!

A couple of my pullets that I got from Horesfeatherz have just started laying! I got 2 eggs from them yesterday. At least I hope it's them, otherwise I'm getting a very light colored egg from one of my new marans. Come to think of it, 1 egg was speckled like a marans' egg but it was lighter than most Orp eggs. Oh well, sometimes it takes a few days for the dye glands to kick in correctly.

But they are just over 4 months old! Woo hoo that's early!

Howdy....long time no see!
We've been busy getting our 4 yr old horse trained, planting the garden, cleaning up chicken dust

Cant remember if I shared that I had 28 babies in the dinning room til they were coop-ready. Got all the girls in their new coop. We took a design we saw here on BYC, then tweaked it to suit our tastes.
Wish I hadnt dropped my camera, then I could share the new birds and the coop.

Think I babbled 'nuff.....now for some brain pickin'.
I shared a while back about how we (actually Hubbers

) destroyed a viable egg/chick in process when it got tossed in the compost pile.......
weeeeell the Bannies, Fric & Frac, went broody again so I marked an egg, and the calendar

, to see what happened.
Today is day 21, to best of my knowledge. When I checked on the egg this evening I heard a lil' "peep" ...scared the pee outta me!

Fric & Frac have been sharing "setting duty".....seems those 2 are attached at the hip!
we have them set up in a private area, away from all the other chickens, with the egg, and water.

How soon after hearing the peep should we see a chick?

Will Fric & Frac fight for the "right" to "mother" the chick when it hatches?
Should we remove the chick immediately? I have a brooder ready if needed, and chick starter too.

Bloomie - I like to leave my chicks with mom - in a secure area so the flock can visit but not touch mom and chick/s. I do not know if they (two moms) will fight over the chick, you will have to watch and see. I have not had a double duty broody pair - hopefully they both care for the chick.

In the morning I would pick up one or the other until I found the chick - just to do a little looksee - careful cause sometimes the chicks can tuck up into the feathers and hide really well. CONGRATS on a chick - it is so great to watch the relationship between them.






WOW SunnyDawn, that is early. So far I have only blue/green eggs from the EEs and a pinkish/fleshtone colored egg from the Orp/Del crosses - one egg does have white spotting on it. Currently have two O/Ds laying (Petunia Face and Pansy Face)- but the pullets from your hatch are not yet - faces are not even deep red and no swelling to the combs.

Tomorrow I am going to give them a good hard looksee just incase.
