penturner, the tomatos g out every day and can stay out at night so far, but my mom is still bringing them in just in case. Theyve stayed ot overnight on accident a few times and been fine, so if youre feeling confident about the last freeze being like two weeks ago, go ahead. Im scared to leave mone out tho.

Lost a hen to heat today.

My sister found the Speckled Sussex dead in the shade. I will be avoiding the more 'fluffy' hens from now on. I had her turn on the mister we installed, force the chicks to wade and sit in a pan of cool water, and put out frozen 2 liter water bottles for the hens to sit against. Jean was one of my original hens. The other original girl, Buffy, died a few months ago. Wish it would've been one of the 3yr olds that I can't give away. *sigh* I guess this is part of the learning process that is keeping chickens in the desert.

Wow, you have all been so busy while I was away! Just got back from the chicken stock in Kelseyville. We had a geat time! It was so much fun! Penturner there was a gal there that was selling Seramas. They were so tiny and so cute! I can't imagine how teeny tiny their eggs must be though! Her screen name is Silver Phoenix. I told her about your Serama project so she may PM you.

Genny it was one of your gals that laid the new egg! That is crazy early! What were you feeding the pair that sired these babies? The 2nd speckled egg apparently came from one of my older RIRs. She has always laid an egg that was a little freckled but they were much darker than this one and not nearly so speckled. That's why I thought that it too had come from one of the new pullets. But no, there is only 1 pullet that is laying and I suspect it is from the Orp/Del X 'cause it is a pinky brown color. It is a small (almost medium) egg but I'm glad for that since she is so young yet. Have been gone so I haven't seen what the neighbor collected this weekend but I'll keep an eye out for any more from this girl.

I had to laugh... Read the on-lines this morning and Santa Fe, NM, is having a heatwave.... all of 91 degrees. Heck, for we Nevadans that's just a balmy day!

The upside to this scorch-fest we're having in Las Vegas is that I have turned my brooder off. The downside is that I now have the air-con (set on 90+) running for my remaining five black Star chicks in the casita guest house.... Yeppers, I'm pretty sure I've crossed over into the realm of Crazy Chicken Lady.

So sorry to hear about Jean. SS are nice birds and very pleasant to work with. Have you tried the feeding them frozen watermelon trick? Melons in the Hispanic markets are REALLY cheap right now.... Like 8 lbs/$1. The curcurbits (sp? well, melon and cuke family) are full of electrolytes and feeding them frozen helps cool from the inside.

Vegaschick. Sorry about your hen. I am amazed anyone can manage to keep any chickens alive down there when the ovens really turn up.

Sunny Dawn, I hope you had a good time. Thanks for mentioning me, I need all the help I can get. Just spent another $75 yesterday for a second Roo and postage. Would be real nice to save that $50 postage fee. I think you missed some of the best weather we have had in a long long time. But don't tell VegasChick about it. She has it in for the heat right now.

PeepShow, Do you just use watermelong or any of the cucurbit family? Reason I'm asking is because I'll have all of them in my garden so I can use those. No pesticides on them.

Maybe we would start a Nevada heat thread with everyone putting in their heat remedies? I would sure check it out on a regular basis being a newbie.

The old wives' tale is if you feed your chickens cukes, your eggs will get bigger. Cukes are full of vitamins, too.

The short answer is "Yes" you can...although I can only imagine what a frozen cucumber would be like. (Ewwwww when it thaws)

hey guys, im in reno nv and i was wondering if any of you had any clue where i might find grown hens for sale. as cute as i find baby chicks to be, i really dont want to go through raising them again. i got three chicks from the feed store in carson and two turned out to be male. their fate is still unknown but once i find out what to do with them, i will only have one chick left. any info on buying chicks over six weeks old would be awesome (and maybe some on finding homes for little roos, too!)
