Nevadans?

it is really exciting to see so many reno-ites here! i dont feel ive ever seen a chicken a town, but they must be there somewhere!!!

briteday i may be interested in one of your rirs. Im just not sure if any of my babes are male, it feels like it but im getting alot of people saying that some hens just develop early. i actually came on to ask where i could get some full grown, since by the time i can actually sex mine, the other(s) will be full grown and i dont want to do chicks again. i didnt expect to get one RIGHT NOW, but i am very surprised at how many of you sell them. i have checked craigslist to get an idea and there is nearly nothing.

anywhoo...its really nice to meet you all. id love to see your chickens someday!

three weeks old and already pink, what do you thing? pretty pointy comb, but i guess girls can have pointy combs. i also have two easter eggers. one of them is almost comepletely feathered on the head and has the tinyest little beak, the other has no head feathers yet and a really wide "comb". much more noticable, but not red....idk, if my predictions are true then i have two little boys and only one little girl

i THINK the combs are more important than the wattles, but don't quote me on that....

and as far as people willing to sell laying birds here, sometimes you wouldn't post a bird ofr sale, but you find out a friend wants one and go sure.. you can but this one and that one....
i just sold 3 of my EE's to vegaschick.... i wouldn't have listed them on craigs list.... but i had been pondering downsizing to make more room for these new breeds i got... and the ones from my MFC project i need to keep and grow out....

on a side note, i saw a pic, and i know it's not show standards, but i really liked it and wanted one.. a silkie with a straigh comb... i looked close today at my 4 weekish silkies, one of them has a straight comb!! i'm soo excited...

aubreynoramarie I would not worry yet - wattle development there is typical for both pullets and cockerels at this age. I had a pair of dels last year - one had lots of comb and wattle development - she turned out to be a pullet. Give the chick a couple weeks - if it is a roo - the comb will get noticably pink - not flesh but pink/blush red.

yeah ive been running around this site all night and decided it would be best if i ave them at least another month. i just dont want to get too attatched if any of them turn out to be little boys, but i am really gonna be positive and continue to call them by their girl names for a while longer

horsefeatherz, what all are the roo's you have for sale? Do you have any that will keep the squirls and cats away?
Penturner, i did sooo not do the daddy's little girl skit.

He's the one who wants the rooster, for his own hens because the squirls are getting into the eggs and he's hoping that will help. But it does kinda suck because he's very adament on one rooster on the property, so if any of mine turn out to be little boys...thanks dad we alread have your rooster, so little jack gets to go to the crock pot.

laceynoelle

Here are the cockerels/roos I have now.
Gumpers – splash Orpington (from Gumpsgirl birds) and Lightfoot (Orpington/Cochin cross) both hatched 10/09/09 – neither of these roos are with hens – they are together with Marilyn (my EE roo) in one of our horse pastures/bachelor pads.

Then I have three cockerels – hatched March 1, 2010 – one Orpington (Splash/buff cross – Father is exhibition Orp/mother Hatchery orp) and two Orpington/EE crosses who are beardless/muffless but have pea combs and blue legs (out of a blue/green egg) – all three of these cockerels are just starting to show interest in hens, calling for treats and crowing. I will try and get pictures of these guys today.

I tend to process extra cockerels at about 5 months of age, so do not have a lot of them running around. I also have younger ones coming up, but they would be too young for your group I believe.

I am not sure if any of them will chase the cats and squirrels away. I do not have cats – ok, there is a dumped cat that hides in one of our sheds but it does not count. My birds are not afraid of the dogs – my dogs walk amongst them, sometimes they do chase a pigeon or two but not out of true aggression/get out of here mode. One of our Mastiffs does get his nose pecked every once in a while – he likes to sniff and snuffle the chickens and the chickens tend to not care for it.

As for the squirrels – it is gross but here is what I do. Do you have a dog? My border collie is a fantastic rodent hunter but cannot always get the squirrel once it goes to ground. Tired of all the holes and easy access to my chicken feed/eggs – I started putting…………………………are you ready……………..dog poop down the squirrel holes. I dump it down and with a stick push down the hole a bit. So far, the squirrels have STOPPED using the holes and no new ones are being formed. After a couple days, I just kick some sand down into the hole to close it up.

Separate note – in my main pen, I have 3 roos. One Large fowl Orpington and then two bantams – one Rosecomb and one RIR. They all get along fairly well for roosters. My Versace (orp) is of course king of the coop and will break up fights between the other two, or stop young cockerels from fighting. Versace also stops the bantams or young cockerels from mating with the hens. I like the fact that the girls have a couple roos – cause the girls do not like to stay in a group when out and about – extra roos gives the girls more protection. (might want to mention to your dad)

Bein's ya'll were so kind to reply about the egg I thought peeped at me, I thought I'd update ya.

I waited a few extra days to be sure, but there were no signs of peeping or pipping and today we cracked it open to see what went wrong.
The poor chick was fully formed but was stuck to the shell.
We candled another egg that the Broody was sittin' on and it was dead as well.
After doing some research, there's a lot that can go wrong...*sigh*....guess I wont know for sure what happened under that Broody.

Shes still settin' on 4 eggs...maybe we'll get a good one yet!

aaawwwwww
i would almost say incubate the otehrs if they're fertile.. she obviously isn't turning them like she needs to...

good luck
