Nevadans?

Heheheh..... Nope. I'm staying put. I cannot yet afford an island on my puny pittance. Even if my wildest lottery dreams came true, I wouldn't move to an island. I actually went kinda stir-crazy on HI thinking about it (being on an island) after a week or so.... (probably not enough rum in my parasol'd drinks to keep me mellow...)

I felt the same way! Used to go a lot (Dad worked for United Airlines) and loved it for a while but... Now DD is pestering me all the time to move there. It's great to visit but there's just no way!

HOAs are the worst! The benefits are nice but way too many restrictions! We moved where we did because there weren't any HOAs or CC&Rs. Realtor thought we were nuts! Still have to keep the neighbors happy though since we're in city limits. Luckily they love the chickens! I have great neighbors here.
I sure hope it works out. We're all pulling for you!

Saw it on the news this morning, looks nasty!
Used to love the summer monsoons, in Arizona, when I was a kid. You could smell the rain coming when it was still hours away!

Thanks Penturner!

Lacey I was kinda hoping for something built in so I can keep both hands free when candleing. Had a bad experience a few years back with clutsy fingers and dropped eggs when using a flashlight.

Genny I meant to tell you that your girl had no problems last night. She went right into the coop with the others once the sun started to go down. I have never seen such an easy adjustment to a new flock ever! I'm tellin' ya, you've got a winner on those crosses! Beautiful and smart!

Does she have a name or do I need to come up with one?

Sunny - Her easy transfer makes me so happy!

I wondered about her last night and this morning - silly maybe - but you just grow to care about them. She never really had a name here - just the nickname "Honker" (wow that sure does not read well!)
lol.png

I really like the crosses too. I mean I love my hatchery birds, but the Heritage are so different - not just size but attitude and even thinking. I have some of Versace's first generation of "pure" APA Orps growing now (cause they are "my" first
hide.gif
I call them

Adam and Eve

). Their broody mom was my Rosecomb SilverChick, who was killed by the raven, so they have been raised by me since then - and they are huge mush ball chicks. I need to get some pictures transfered of them - they hatched with an Orp/EE cockerel, so are the same age, but easily 2-3 times the size. And true gentle giants (they cry, a very mournful crying churp, when left alone *none of the crosses have ever cried like this). These chicks egg mother(s) is from Gumpgirls flock (they cried also

)

In the July 7th hatch there are a couple "pure" orps - blues and splashes. I cannot wait to see what the blues look like - I hope they have the great lacing that Versace seems to throw on the crosses.

Almost forgot again - my announcement - Greens Feed in Reno will now start carrying (yes carrying, no need to special order any longer

) Flock Raiser in PELLET form.

So if you feed crumble and hate the waste (both wildbirds love the crumble and the wind just blows it away), now you can try the pellet (I love the pellet feed).

Yup got the auto-egg turner....I agree its a worthwhile investment.
Also from my brief experience with the LG I have to say adding plenty of humidity wells would be a plus.

I had aquarium tubing running thru the small holes on the top of the LG to the wells, a dish, and 2 sponges , tryin' to keep the humidity up durin' lockdown and still had a difficult time.

I'm not building any coop yet as there's still a bit of bureaucratic paperwork to contend with. Unfortunately, a neighbor with whom I'm having a bit of a tug with may have the deciding vote on Yea or Nay with my backyard project. (Oh, I so hate HOA's...) He wasn't too happy with the nasty-gram he got about his bootleg construction project that was discovered hidden behind some rather overgrown shrubbery that also got addressed. He's a real hall monitor type, too, so I anticipate retalliation. Sigh....

The Las Vegas Valley often gets So-Cal pollution, especially fire haze. At present, though, we have the monsoons going which are blowing it away from us. It looks on the news to be a really gnarly fire....but, no, I don't think Bloomie's gone bloodhound on us.

Sniff Sniff.....whatz dat schmell???
lau.gif

Twernt that I could see
cool.png
fire anywhar, jus we had alot of smokey haze that the wind was carryin', signaled fire was burnin' somewharz.

We had a lightenin' started fire jus o'r the Adobe Mts......west of us. Scorched 275 acres as of 7pm last night.
Fire out here wiggs me cuz we aint got a fire hydrant near by like we did in Vegas. We've taken precautions and have a good fire break around the property.....datz 'bout all one kin do.

When we bought our home in Vegas we refused to live in a subdivision that had them blasted HOA's. Our daughters had HOA's nightmares with there condos tho.
Living in rural Nevada had its pros 'n cons. Some folks dont take pride in their homes and have sooooooooooooo much "stuff" everywhar. I aint opposed to havin' a supply of materials around, but its gotta be organized.
The Monster Man has to keep his "stuff" behind the shed row whar I aint gotta view it from the back porch.....then I wont mess with his work bench
gig.gif

Got a few hens outta the 26 that are beginnin' to lay purdy regular......gettin' 5 eggs a day so far. I was glad they stepp'dup to lay since the layers we had are....uuuuh.....eeeerrrr......gone.

Seriously, I know y'all want something home-made....but I cannot recommend the Cool-Lite tester enough. It's like a plug-in penlight that you hold against the shell at the air sac end of the egg and it positively acts like a spot light on whoever is dancing inside. Whereas I was guessing before, I could distinctly see feet and wings and gyrations (unhatched chicks don't really like bright lights)...It was SO neat. And you don't have to handle the eggs if you've got them in a turner as the air sac end is already up. The Cool-Lite can be found on-line for about $16, I think. Well worth it, especially since I had previously misinterpreted three quitters that weren't.

VERY funny!
We have one guy in our neighborhood who sidelines in swapmeets and quasi-antiques. His house is to the brim and his yard spilleth over. The problem is one man's junk is another man's treasure....and he's convinced he's got a treasure trove to stash and store under his ungroomed overgrown shrubbery, but the rest of the neighborhood is subjected to such questionable-of-value junky yard art as one-antlered deer statuary (along with its mate who is missing a leg), rusted barrel hoops propped up against a tree, an old rusted milk can.... I swear, the man's an old washboard away from a hillbilly diorama . And the funny thing is he's the one who's such a hall monitor complaining that the neighbor's exposed 1" of landscape waterer tubing is bringing down the neighborhood values! Peoples be crazy.....

Heya, SparksNV....
Don't know if you're still looking, but.....
Check out the pullets for sale in the "8 weeks and older" auction section. They're Point of Lay and in Grass Valley , CA (which is closer than Sacto). Not an auction as she's selling them straight up. CUTE WyandotteX hen and some nice blue Wyandottes.

Good luck on your search!

P.S. Sunny if you decide to go with a water container with a wick, I have installed a small modified swamp cooler float connected to a bucket outside of the incubator to maintain a constant water level and help stabilize the humidity better.

Thanks for the suggestions, but many, many thanks to Genny (Horsefeathers) - I have 7 pullets on hold just waiting for us to finish the coop! 3 already have names!

Today, dh & I finished one wall. He will work more tomorrow (I'll be at my job) & hopefully finish it over the weekend - he doesn't go back to work until Wednesday. Then I will set up supplies & hopefully, pick them up next weekend! Yahoo!!
