ordered chicks from Justuschickens for October (she has partial English Orps - two full English, clem and winston - beautiful birds). But I ordered chicks from her cause I am tired of being skunked on shipped eggs.

Awesome! Post pics when they get here.

Thanks Daniel! Appreciate you doing this for us!

vegaschick let us know what you come up with! DH and I have been racking our brains for an easy solution to running water to the coop that doesn't involve daily trips out to refill waterers. We could always bury a line to keep it cool and to keep it from freezing in winter but we hate to dig up the yard (again).

ke_ben, can't wait to see pics of your new BCM roos! My BCM gals are all laying right now. Love those dark eggs!!! Yes we are loving the classic cars all over town right now. Wish you could all come up to see them and say hi.

Lacey is Jack the roo you wrote that cute poem about toward the beginning of this thread? I still remember that!

SparksNV great to hear you got your computer back and now have your new flock home! Congrats!!!

Well goodnight everybody! These old bones are tired after dancing tonight.

's NV thread! We are always glad to have more chicken people...especially here in the southern section. As far as fertile eggs go...I may know someone that has some Buff Orp or Blue Copper Marans mixes available (the hens are BO, RIR, Red Sex-link and some Frizzled Cochin banty mixes) or I know that Jones Feed will have chicks by next Thurs/Friday. I also found an ad on CL offering some BR or BA chicks too. They don't mention how old they are though. Here's the link. http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/grd/1885016237.html

Hope
that helps.

SunnyDawn - I will definately let you know what we come up with...with pics! Glad you had a great time dancing and enjoy the cars for me too.

ke_ben - Happy to help. You've been really great in getting me the breeds that I want so I'm happy to be able to return the favor.

SparksNV - Congrats on the hens and the computer. I hate being w/out either one.

HorseFeatherz NV & laceynoelle - Great pics! Really. You both have some beautiful birds.

Thanks vegaschick for the tips. I would definitely be interested in those eggs, though I've never really given much thought to BO's are they good layers? If you can give me any more information I'd really appreciate!

That craigslist ad I just replied to. It's a really tempting offer, and hopefully I'll be able to get those chicks as soon as I can. Just by looking at the pic, do you think you can tell if they're hens or not, I don't want to end up with more roosters, and I'm really terrible at picking hens.

The jones feed store I may take a look later, if I don't get the chicks or the fertile eggs.

Again, thanks for the help!

Good Morning Nevadans!

We went to the Grand Sierra on Thursday to look at cars and to dream... one day my dh hopes to have a vette to work on.
tongue.png

The gals had a quiet night in the coop - dh went out this morning to open the pop door and said 4 were on one roost and 2 on the other. They have been eating out of the feeders - so I guess they're okay!

Olivia enjoyed one of the eggs Horsefeathers (Genny) gave us - It smells so good I think it's time for me to have one, too!

Genny, Thanks for the compliments about my daughters - they are great daughters! Taylor, the older one, has proven to be pretty good with them so far - She can catch them gently and quickly. Olivia is still a bit timid when catching them but she is learning.

I will try to do pics later - hope everyone has a great day!

Welcome Bobby, Good luck locating some chicks.

Lessee on the waterers.
Sunny 10
Horsefeatherz 10
SparksNV 10
plus what I want. I will still order a hand full of extras just to have around

I just ran a trial order through for 60 nipples and it comes out with a final cost per nipple with shipping of $1.32

I will place that order tomorrow morning. that gives everyone 24 hours to see that final price and either join in or change their mind.

Freezing with these could be a problem. It won't for me. My birds will be moved indoors if the temp falls below 40 degrees and the water systems will be drained.
My system is for the most part in shade but we do add ice cubes to the reservoirs each day. We have to dump out the reservoirs every few days as they start to get dust and other stuff in them. I use 2 liter soda bottles as reservoirs and they do tend to collect a little junk every few days. We also have to test each nipple every day and verify they have not clogged up. So far that has not been a problem but it only takes once.

Quick question:

When I weed my yard, can I give them to the chickens? I am not sure of the names of the weeds but they are the typical No NV weeds. Also, when my annual flowers are done (marigolds and petunias) and I weed that flower garden, can I give them to the chickens. What about when I de-head the marigolds, can I give the old dried heads to them?

Penturner - price is good for me!

Thanks!

SparksNV I would give them all my weeding and such. They will pick at it and scratch thru it, then you can compost or throw it out. Glad they had a good night

Penturner Price is good for me too.

I love, love, love my Orpingtons! I have one hatchery girl (a Buff) and then 3 Splash, 1 Blue and 3 black heritage pullets/hens. Plus a couple roosters/cockerels. I find them to be good layers with medium sized eggs – my hatchery girl lays a tad larger – my APA or heritage birds are so mellow. My head roo was re-homed to me as an adult, and you would think I raised him. He is super gentle with people, good with the hens, newly hatched chicks and even new ducklings. I think they tend to exude mellowness, even when startled they are not “crazy, flighty” they are calmer. What does get them excited is………food! Did I mention I really like them? If you cannot find what you are looking for local (but I am sure you will), I could ship you mixed hatching eggs - My Orp Versace would be the father and the possible mothers: Orpingtons, EEs, and Deleware (I also have Cochins, but they tend to throw cockerels, so I would try to remove those eggs).

Vegaschick Thank you. I am so glad you are going to keep your little broody

Here's a link to a site that names plants that are poisonous to chickens. To tell you the truth I never worry about it though. I've searched several sites and the plants they list as poisonous are the ones my gals won't touch! Seems that chickens are a little smarter than some folks give them credit for.

Yes I know that someone will have a story about an exception to this rule but I believe that nature sometimes does know best and the occasional cull that may happen is just nature's way of keeping my whole flock stronger.

Daniel that works for me too. Actually can I add 10 more to my order? Been talkin' to some friends who have had great luck with these waterers and suggest I have a lot more on hand than I planned on. So a total of 20 for me @ $26.40, thanks!

Bobby_A, I love my Orps! They each lay 4-5 eggs a week and they are always extra large and jumbo sized. They are hatchery birds so are raised for better egg production and are not as big as the heritage stock, so they aren't as well suited for dual purpose as Orps are supposed to be but I raise mine for eggs not meat so it works for me. I got mine because our winters are fairly challenging for some poultry and Orps do really well in the cold.
My concern for you down there in the south is that your temps are even higher in the summer, than ours, and my gals suffer up here in the summer (and really slow down on egg production as well even though I take a lot of pains to keep them cooler). I know that someone (evonne or vegaschick?) had some input on this a little while back... what do you Vegas area folks think?

vegaschick, thank you for being willing to take pics as well! That is always sooo much more helpful! I am a very visual learner and get lost sometimes when an explanation is verbal only. One of my favorite things about this thread is the sharing of ideas.

I've almost got all the supplies together for my incubator so I will post detailed pics of the parts before construction and how they are put together. A special thanks to Kevin for all the tips and great advice! My goal is to be ready to start incubating by late January.

As ya'll know, day 1 with chickens - soooo many questions but I will limit myself so's ya'll don't get too annoyed...

All 6 pullets are under the coop - cooler and safer is my thought, eventhough there is more shade available in the run, it's just not covered. They are squatting/sitting down. However, they are panting. Taylor is moving one of the water bowls under the coop. Should I be concerned? Thanks!

You could turn on the hose on gently and run it in a shady spot for them - or even a few feet from the coop (not right next to it, cause they will scratch and dig at the moist sand/ground). Also a small container with some of their pellets - let the hose run in and make soup out of it - it will hydrate and help cool them a bit.

Moving the water and making sure it is cool is a good thing.
