BR and NHR are great layers once they get started. It is pretty amazing, I got 3 BR's in my first CL batch and I have gotten an egg from them every day that I have had them without fail by 10:30 each morning. I do not have any reds but my Black Stars and Leghorns have kicked in finally and so I get around 8 eggs a day pretty consistently. There is one that is not laying every day because like every 4th or 5th day I only get 7 eggs. That is still pretty decent ratios though.

I cannot wait to see how my GLW's, SLW's, BA's and BO's work out with the egg production. Of course I am about 6 months off from that. hehe

On the Henderson regulations... I thought Reno was being snarky about the rooster ordinance but I am just blown away at the extent they go. I mean I could understand I guess if we were talking about downtown NYC or something but Henderson, NV?

And I totally agree with Sunny about moving out of town. I am on a 1/3 of an acre and I am so OCD about being out there every day to clean the pen and I am completely paranoid that someone might get a whiff of chicken and start some problems. My neighbours really could care less one way or another and I have one neighbour that actually brings out chairs and he and his daughter (He is 74 and she is in her 50's) sit next to the fence and watch the chickens while drinking their coffee in the morning. I guess it goes to prove that you really should not take anything for granted and count every blessing you are presented with. I will keep you all in my good chicken juju vibe thoughts...

a couple times a week i have been getting broken/eaten eggs, which i am trying to catch, but there were none eaten today, they just only laid 4. does it have anything to do with molt? maybe since i changed feeds? do they maybe have a parasite? if anyone has ideas please lemme know!

That's why I moved recently - now on 9.64 acres with no neighbors to the south or the east.

I'm up to about 8 a day from my 10 girls. So there's still a couple of holdouts! I think it's the BSLs but I don't really know...

I am on .14 of an acre! 1/3 of an acre would seem large by comparison (more than twice my lot size).

This is a pretty small lot to have chickens on! City of Reno doesn't say I can't have roos but they do give all of my neighbors the power to nix my plans any time they choose.

Sounds like a calcium problem with the broken/eaten eggs. Mine were doing that in the beginning and all I did was go down and buy some oyster shells and started mixing it in with their regular feed until they got the taste for them and now I just keep a separate feeder of them next to their regular feed.

I was feeding them Layer pellets and then putting the oyster shells in with their feed made their shells super hard and they could not break them. Once they got out of the habit of being able to eat their eggs, I just scaled back on giving them layer pellets and only give them the oyster shells with their cracked corn and scratch.

I do not know if that is the problem with your chickens but if you have not tried it yet or do not already feed them the shells, you could try it.

I agree. Extra calcium should help. As Genny pointed out, a while back, broken eggs don't automatically mean egg eaters. If the eggs are broken accidently they will eat them (they are delicious after all) but it doesn't necessarily mean they will start purposefully breaking them to eat them. Good luck with that.

How are everybody's babies doing? Mine are still trying to finish the molting process so egg production is down but I still have some young ones laying or about to lay. No babies right now though and I miss having little ones. So I need pics of your babies to hold me to spring.

Please?

Thanks for the diagnosis guys, but they have free access to oyster shell, and when i feed them scrambled eggs i stir the shells in with it for extra calcium. today i got 7 eggs with none eaten, but like i said, yesterday i only got 4, and the last few weeks i haven't got more than 6 a day. Any other ideas?

So ... I have two little fuzzy butts right now and hopefully by the end of the night I will have at least 4 more !! I am so excited but of course I am leaving to go out of town once all of this starts !
