Nevadans?

Aha SunnyDawn--Thanks for that information, like I said I am in no way an expert and even though I have never had any problems (or rather my hens have not shown any problems

)using the cat food in the past, I will stick with the Turkey Grower since I have nearly 80 chickens worms and crickets are out of the question for us, although I am sure they find a few here in there. the Turkey Grower I have has 23% Protein so that boost should help. Also I never fed the cat food as a feed source but more as a treat like I feed the scratch.

I enjoy learning on here

As a first time, and relatively new chicken "mommy" - I'm so thrilled we now have a second hen laying!!!! Got our first egg from our Golden Laced Wyandotte yesterday. Yeah Ella!! Just wanted to share my excitement. Now if I could just get my other two in gear....
Loving it. These chicks are amazing.

Regarding cat food:
HI folks, I have been feeding my girls lay pellets at 16% protein, and I mix in scratch and cat food at a rate of about 15% cat food, 15% scratch, and 70% lay food. The goodies get their appetitie then they have to eat pellets. The cat food I use is Purina Indoor Cat forumla. The high protein of the cat food offsets the low protein of the scratch. If I could find dog food in small bites like the cat food I'd prefer to use that, as I'm not ready to start crushing dog food by the bushel. Anyone know of a itty bitty small-bite chihuahua size dry dog food?

Julie, I have the flyer for that right here! My husband picked it up somewhere & told me "we're going". He wants to enter our girls in a show sometime. He thinks they're so pretty - and I have to agree, they are. My little Lakenvelder just did a little "squat" too. I should have three egg layers very soon!
Everybody have a great day.

Great Jennifer! I hope to meet you there! I will probably be running around like a (you know what) with no head!!! We have really been trying to spread the word by putting bright yellow fliers out! So it is nice to know people are finding them. This show will be great! ~Julie~

*phew* Took me a little bit to catch up tonight... My computer died on me Tuesday and it took us a bit to figure out the problem and then get it back up and running. The video card fried for some reason when the NV Energy guy switched out the meters on Tuesday.

It has been a pretty busy week without the computer that's for sure. I am SO ready for the babies to be out of my house. *LOL* I can deal with dust but the smell is driving me crazy. I have been letting them play outside from around 9:30 a.m to 2:30/3:00 p.m. every day to give them time in the sun and my bathroom a break but with it threatening to rain the last two days and it being so much colder out their outside time has been cut drastically which means there has been now airing out of my bathroom for two days.

They are losing their baby fluffy and getting in their feathers so they look all mangy. hehe The poor babies. We almost lost my little SLW rooster this week, somehow he figured out a way to get out of the pen outside (I have this thing strapped down like Ft. Knox so I do not know how he got out) and the dogs decided to play chicken herder with the baby and excited him way too much. I think he was having a heart failure from the over stimulation. I took him and babied him all day and he came back out of his chicken coma but he's still pretty gun shy.

I called up Ideal to see if they had shipped out my order yet and it is not scheduled to go out until the 3rd so I explained to them what happened and they are going to add a few SLW roosters chicks to my order (free of charge, I guess we are not the only ones that are trying to keep down the rooster population) just in case he does not make it. He is really doing great and I think he is going to be fine but mentally I think if we kept everyone together in one big pen he would definitely not be the main rooster. Perhaps when I separate every one into their own pens and he only has his hens to deal with he will perk back up though.

Coop News: We got two of the walls up this week and 3/4 of the fence ditch dug up and half of the fence posts setup. We are hoping that the rain lets up some tomorrow and we can at least get all of the walls/door up and the fence finished. One of my neighbours is a painter, he saw me out there digging up the yard and wanted to know if we were building a play house for the boys. *LOL* I told him about the chickens and offered to give him some eggs so he has offered to paint the coop for us with his airless sprayer once we get everything finished. The power of the dozen fresh eggs.

Mary-Ellen (briteday) has so generously given me some extra paint that they had from a project so I have some of the paint and a painter now ready to go when we get the walls and door up. I cannot believe how long it has taken us to get this coop built but you cannot predict weather or the economy that is for sure. I know the girls will be super happy to be able to get out of the cold once we get their house built. The temporary pallet coop only works to keep them dry, not really warm.

Well I am off for now, I will keep you all in my prayers and I hope to be able to get back into the swing of things on here pretty soon.
