unfortunately, i have some that are not so pleasant. I noticed that my girls have something going on on their tummies. I posted in the pest & predators thread. here is the link:

Very interesting pics and open to Sherlockian surmises. Deduction: Since the condition appears to be on the underside of the chickens, it could be an irritation close to the ground, i.e., an allergic reaction to new bedding (different wood in sawdust? New DE?), fungus in the ground where they sunbathe/dust baths, pesticide (Sevin or other anti-mite dust) sprinkled about, new nesting material, disinfectant cleaning products. Think about any new substance that may have been introduced or a new brand you may be using. It appears to be a contact situation.

Does it smell foul? Or is it matted from just a liquid contact with something?

Without knowing your coop practices, it is hard to pinpoint. Go out there and look around your coop to anything that a chicken may settle down into or something they may have walked into that could be an irritant.

doesn't smell bad, feels gritty, only "new" item is a flock block that they have been nibbling on. I use pine shavings in the coop but I did just put down some straw in the nest box but it has never bothered them before (this was just on Tuesday). I haven't noticed any mold or anything different. When we have bad weather, they go under the coop which is protected on several sides. I took the siding off and the underside looks ok. We have not treated for any weeds or critters. I really cannot understand what they may be getting in contact with.

How should I treat this?

Wow, I've seen how clean your coop and run areas are. I would have guessed the same as Peeps, a new material or chemical but since you haven't introduced anything new I am totally stumped!

Let us know if you figure it out so we can be aware of it for our flocks. What do they roost on? I worry about their ability to take the cold at nights with their down and feathers missing in such a large spot as the one hen shows.

Anyone know how to get NPIP Certification in Northern Nevada? I called the number for the Disease and FoodSafety Laboratory, but the number has been disconnected and I cant find another number anywhere! Thanks in advance...

Git - http://agri.nv.gov/Animal2_npip.htm I contacted and spoke to the state Vet. She is really nice. At that time - she told me there are NO NPIP flocks in the state of NV. Testing for under 100 birds is almost $5 per bird - over 100 it is about $3.50 (this was last years prices - and roughly off the top of my head). No testing is done in state, it all send to WSU (washington state university). If you find things to be different - please let me know and I will look back into it again.
