Sunny;
Would it be possible to get a look at your coop?
we are in the process of finishing our coop and are looking for nest box ideas.
We would love to visit your chickens.

Sure. Like I said it's not very cute but that's just a matter of finishing touches (DH and I are both terrible about finishing projects).
I'd invite y'all over for a BBQ but this weather stinks!
Jeeps, the last couple of storms kinda side swiped us. This weekend was more wind and bluster than anything else. My run area is finally starting to dry out a little.
Thanks Aubrey!
Ron tell Sunny that three of the girls she saw at my place are Genny's and they are awesome girls! I love my blue girls from Genny, they are beautiful, super sweet and good layers!
Sorry that I haven't been around in a while but I've been kind of busy. (You know; work, surgery, life, animals.) Anyway, no time to catch up on reading completely but it looks like everybody is dealing with the normal spring (wind, wet, work, and chicks). About those blue eggs that ended up green, I have had the same issue in the past but finally ended up with some that are much better. Sunny, I like the bator, does it hold temp well? Oh, and on the automatic waterer, bury the line deep and come up from the bottom through a well insulated large diameter pipe or 5-gal bucket with your water/pan heater setting right on top of it.
We are in the middle of goat kidding season (4 babies so far with 6 more does due) and county fair stuff (judging poultry). We are going to be cutting back on chicken breeding some (after this springs chicks anyway,
) so if anybody is interested in anything that I have speak now...or forever, well you know. I will be mixing the Lt Brahmas back in with the main flock in a couple of days and getting rid of the roo (anyone, anyone, he is nice!) for good, so let me know real quick on those for any hatching eggs. Everything seems to be really fertile, the fair people and vegaschick have had good results so far. I have Welsummers, Delawares, Lt Brahmas, Ameraucanas, BCM, and buff orp ducks (also buff X runner) plus almost any other Ameraucana cross you can think of. We will probably only keep a couple of roos after spring and the olive egger project so if anyone has an interest let me know.

You had surgery? Well I hope you have an easy recovery (and if it hasn't been easy I hope it gets easier soon!).
Thought about burying it deep. It was the run up to the elevated coop that had me stumped but of course I can just run a wide tube from the ground to the coop floor (I think the concrete setting forms would work perfectly since they come in large diameter sizes) and then run the water line up through that and then fill with sand. That will keep the pipe from freezing and the light inside will take care of the temp once inside. Thank you! I don't know why I didn't think of that before!
Next coop I build I will just run electrical conduit through one pier and water pipe through another then fill the hollow concrete blocks before setting the foundation on top of the piers. That way the connections will just stick up through the floor when the subflooring is installed, like a house. Uh oh DH is gonna complain that my coops are getting even more complicated than they already were! Am I going overboard? Seriously, those of you that have to slog water out to the coop every day, wouldn't it make more sense to add a few hours of construction to the beginning of a project and save yourselves hours of work every single month later? Tell me if I'm overplanning, I can take it (I think).
Now if I could only teach my birds to use a toilet I could run a waste line into the coop and...
Thanks for the compliment on the bator ke-ben! It is keeping perfect temps now! I created a buffer zone in the back of the bator, like you suggested, but the flex watt heat tape does not get it quite hot enough in that compartment. There is a fan at the bottom (in the main compartment), drawing warm air out of the heating area and into the bator but I had to add a small heater to the main compartment to get the temps up a little more. Both the flex watt heat tape and the space heater are hard-wired to the thermostat. I finally found a thermostat that I could afford that hold temps in 2/10 of a degree but it had to be hard-wired and I was hoping for a plug in type to give me more flexibility in case changes had to be made. Still wiring the space heater in as well was no big deal and the temps are holding perfectly now!
Oh, I also had to add additional insulation to the outside of the bator (like you had advised to start with) to keep it from reacting to the temps in the room and to cut down on electrical costs. The thinsulate insulation on the inside was not quite adequate. Still it was worth the extra work cause this hatch is a breeze so far. No stressing over the temps, they have been smooth and steady! This is the only way to go!
The last hatch in this bator was way too stressful and way too much work! Thanks again ke-ben on all your helpful advice when I was planning this project! You saved me a lot of headaches!
I'd be rushing over there for some more birds but I'm afraid I'm getting a tad overwhelmed with all the chickens I have now and I have a few more coming (on top of this hatch) this next week!
I've got to stop soon! This addiction is getting out of hand! I'm gonna have to sell more birds but if each sale bothers me like when I just sold the other Sunny 3 of my girls I'm gonna have a tough time of it.
Why is it so much easier to sell to a fellow BYCer than it is to someone you don't know?
Sunny I have to agree with you - it's much better to spend a little extra time (and $) up front when building a coop. I like the continuous waterer ideas - kudos to you, too, ke_ben! BTW hope you are feeling better. Geez, it seems like almost everyone I know (including myself!) has had surgery in the past 6 months! What's happening to us
?
Don't worry Sunny your babies are going to be just fine. They are living in the lap of luxury in Lakeview!
Their run is a little small but she is expanding it this weekend. Oh and Genny, she doesn't want any more birds right now (but you know how that chicken math goes
) as she went to the feed store and couldn't resist the chicks so she bought some NHRs, RSLs and a BO.
I know, I know 2 post in 1 day, but I went to do something else on the PC and BYC was still up. I just blew a gasket and had to have it repaired back in October. I couldn't lift for about 4 weeks so no normal job but somehow I seemed to stay way too busy anyway. I did end up in the ER the day after with an apparent anesthesia reaction and get a little sore now and then but lifting doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. Thanks for the concern and I second the old but with me it's not the years, it's the miles!
Sounds like the temps are under control, pardon the pun. I thought about sonotubes also, but they are just made out of cardboard so I'm not too sure.
daegorn I will be at the fair some, but then again, I live out here
you know. I'm sure evonne and company will be there sometime.
I saw some on TV that were made from plastic but I never seem to be able to find anything I see on TV here in the local stores. Oh well it probably won't happen til we retire anyway.
