Nevadans?

So she is probably using the most stringent state standard in our part of the country? I am not sure if that is a correct assumption or not. It would make sense though. Also, if I understand this correctly, I still would not be approved for shipping to any state where the standards are more entailed than they are in CA?

I don't have any problem with trying to comply with rules and regulations as long as they make sense and are do-able. I also understand the need to keep healthy stock, if one is selling the products from them to other people. I just wonder why I am always running up against a system that makes the kind of rules that can't be complied with or cost so much no-one can afford to do so. Maybe it is because I live in Nevada, but I suspect it is the case elsewhere as well.

Thank you so much for the poultry disease link. In the last five years, I have only ever had one sick bird ever, so I have never felt the need to check out this information. Now that I am looking to make this a real working farm, I am having to introduce myself to information that I didn't even know was necessary.

I couldn't find a smiley that was laughing anywhere near as hard as I laughed when I read this! So I had to settle.

That's because we have strayed so far from a true free enterprise system to one of crony capitalism, where everything is geared to favor the big guys and stacked against the small entrepreneur.

OK, that's as political as I'm going to get!

Wow, this is my second rant in as many days! I need some chicken time to re-center myself...

It's ok, I've been known to rant against the coorporate takeover of America myself. It really frustrated me when I found out that I couldn't take part in the "Great American Bakesale" (a charity that coordinates neighborhood bake sales to raise money for kids) because in our state (and most states) you have to have prepared baked goods in a "Commercially Certified Kitchen" to sell them.

I know, I know. How's a poor coorporation supposed to compete with delicious home made goodies when the stuff they turn out is so awful? I guess our love of homemade goods is at fault for all these heavy duty regulations. I mean it was small flock raisers that were to blame for the recent egg scare... No wait that was a large conglomerate that was supposed to be safe for commercial distribution. Well I remember all the salmonella scares in the past few years. Surely that must have been caused from produce sold at a local farmers market that wasn't being tested by government facilities? Wait, No? That was also from large cooporate facilities?

Then why the bleep are they penalizing all the local bake sales and farmer's market folks? Oh, sorry, I forgot, the coorporations are losing huge amounts of money to all the little folks out there that are producing such superior products! Silly me, I forget that it's vital for our country's economic health to make sure the coorporations are as profitable as they can be. I mean this is all meant to keep us economically healthy and I for one am sooo happy to have my economic health being protected so well!

OK, I'm letting my true colors show and I'll probably rethink this little rant and edit later but until then...

i agree with all of you on the corporate issues... it's too bad that things have to get so complicated for us regular folks. that NPIP cert seems like a hassle and very costly--especially if you have to repeat it every year!

Sunny that bakesale thing is crazy! that reminds me of stories i've seen in the news about little kids having their lemonades stands shut down for not having business licenses or some such nonsense.

even in most schools, you can't even send homemade birthday treats anymore. i do understand the issues, especially since my son has a peanut allergy and homemade stuff could be dangerous for him, but still it makes me sad that I can't bake treats to send like my mom used to do.

That was one of my favorite things to do for my kids. I do understand the food allergy thing but my kid's teachers were all aware of the allergies their students had and kept treats for those students handy for these situations. I never put nuts in the treats I sent since it was such a common allergy but it is hard to bake anything without eggs, flour, sugar or milk and some kids have terrible problems with these things too. I don't see how buying store bought goods solves this problem though.

What I suspect happened is that problems arose, due to allergies, from baked goods in general and some poor, misdirected soul thought that limiting baked goods to store bought would solve the problem. Of course we know from the news that this has not been the case and better problem solving (from teachers and parents) is what is really needed.
