yikes! not just pitt bulls but any terrier breed! all i can say is at least it isnt a small breed like weenies or jack russels. hopefully your neighbors are responsible and we wont have any accidents

i mean who knows, i have a terrier ( a very close pitt cousin) and for the most part he gives us no trouble. however if that pooch hasnt ever seen chickens before she will probobly be very interested. maybe you guys could put up boards along the fence so she wont be able to even see then hens at all?

hey sunny...what did you think of the paint colors that we did on the outside of the house? different eh?

I know what you mean Aubrey - the first thing on my mind was Elvis and me thinking well if I get a dead chicken and we put it around her neck and she wears it for a week perhaps then they'll be safe? John says it's up to us to make sure we protect our flock and not them. I totally agree with him. The faster the sooner that's for sure.

Thank you Genny, I don't think my DH will do the hot wire though. He already had a plan in his head with an enclosure he's going to build. I'll get him to start building it now so it will be ready when we move the coop in place. One of the things we learned is to build your coop in the place you want it to be all of the time and then see if you can move it around like a tractor coop, he thought he could do this until he tried to lift it a bit and found out there is no way he can move it himself. I told him to do it the same way they built the pyramids in Egypt and he will be fine.

I'm also keeping a good eye on Bella and her abdomen isn't growing at all. I don't think she's laying internally at all but she hasn't laid an egg yet either. Her lip is gone in the mornings and returns in the afternoons from being on her leg all day long. I believe she will recover from it.

Oh and Aubrey, I will not need any of the Delawares to put Bella in her place because the Wyandottes are doing it now. Every time Bella even attempts to jump anyone in the flock they react to it and peck her back into a lower order. Bella will hide in the coop for a few minutes and then will come out again and all is well until she tries to peck one of them again and it starts all over. My DH feels sorry for Bella and wants me to take her out of there but that will only keep the struggles going longer and I also explained to my DH to not forget Bella started it first and it lasted for 2 months of her pecking on the whole flock.

Sheryl and Tyler: Good job with the sick chickens, its nice to hear theyre doing better. I hope they keep it up!! Bella probably wont lay an egg for a bit until she gets back to tip top. I wouldnt want to lay an egg sick. And I wish I was watching the game. My mom wants to watch it too, and she's busy, so its being recorded.
Buck, my dog in the picture with the goats, is part pitbull. He killed a couple chickens when he was young, but we got him to stop. He ate our whole tome turkey when he was 4 months old, we thought he was going to die. No one really cared because the turkey attacked everyone he didnt know. So pretty much everyone but me. ^^ We were going to eat him anyway, but my mom didnt want to kill him herself. The thing with buck, he didnt kill them to kill, I think he just got hungry, because he's kill just one and eat it. After the turkey he never killed anything agian, and he's super gentle now. You saw him licking the baby goat faces clean.

Well, anyway, I love pitbulls. :]
Ron, I got the Dark Cornish from Ideal. Theres still some in stock if you want some. I really like Ideal, because with the outstanding exception of GLW, the chicks the have are really close the the standard for the breed. So far the cornish there are little beasts. I'll put a picture up in a bit if you want. And I had the same idea with the delawares!!! I was thinking about it and they say that cornish roos have stubby legs and might not be able to mate with the females. I wanted to use a Delaware roo because they were meat birds early last century (I think). So far all my delaware chicks look like hens, but Ive got this massive barred rock roo I was considering using for the F1 generation. If the dark cornish roos can do thier manly duty, then I'll use them. If not, I might be looking for a Delaware roo next spring.

If I can keep the line pure, that'd be pretty cool. I'm keeping tract of the smaller ones and we'll eat those. I dont know if these guys will be as large as a breeder's birds. I doubt it, but Ideal has done well so far. When I start hatching Dark Cornish chicks, You all want some?
Genny, I like steak better anyway.

I hope my mom does too. We'll know by next spring either way.

Here's a 4 or 5 week old dark cornish next to either a barred rock or cuckoo maran of the same age. I think its a maran, she's got grey legs.

The cornish chicks are the ones with a black head and colored wings in the top left corner. They look the same size as the GLW at the top right, but when you pick them both up to compare, the corish is heavier.

Annd this is the barred rock roo Im considering using. He's pretty big, healthy, and super sweet. He's standing next to my current scruffy roo. He's about 4 months old. I dont know if all rock roos are this size, but Im impressed. Ha, if I use him I'll be making my own cornish rock cross, only mine will still take a while to grow.

Nice pics Lacey! How old is your SLW roo? I'm still learning the standards on what to look for in the SLW bread so I can be wrong but he looks like he's off a bit on his lacing but again, I can be wrong.

Thanks for the 411 and the pics, Lacey! Those birds do look pretty good. S&W Feed in Carson City gets their chicks from Ideal, too. So I have quite a few from there already and I'm happy with them - especially the EEs. You're right about the Delawares - they were originally bred to be a meat bird back in the 1920's, I think.

We'll have to compare notes on our progress!

Elizabeth your coop looks awesome so far!

Other than the pasty butt, how are your other chicks doing? I don't remember - where did you say you got them?

Thanks, Ron! The chicks are doing great so far. I got them from Ideal. They hatched on Wednesday and arrived Friday morning. They are very energetic.

We got two sections of T-111 siding on today. could have gotten more done if we didn't have so many different activities going on. The siding is definitely a two-person job. oh well. A clamp fell off the top of the coop and hit me on the head tonight. It was a plastic clamp but a big one. I have a major headache right now.

i'm not sure if we'll get much done tomorrow. I have crossfit at 4:30 and then Jose goes to the 6:30 class after I get home and then it gets dark. But my parents are coming tuesday. I am taking some time off during the week here and there so we should be able to get some more done.. especially since we'll have some live-in babysitters for a week!

off to ice my head some more. Here are my coop building injuries so far: hammer prong part into elbow while trying to remove a nail (we are using mainly screws now!), lots of splinters, wall section fell onto toe while I was trying to slide it down off the platform by myself, several scrapes and bruises from various clumsy moves, and tonight's clamp falling on head.
