I'm so bummed! We are going to Red Bluff to pick up our new chickies! I'm excited about that but I wanted to go to the show too.

I will be at the Nov. 19th show though.

Hi Ron, no I did not see your post about the craigslist ad for Penedesencas. Their eggs are gorgeous but they are small to medium and I'm afraid the extra large, creamy eggs of the marans (they really do taste creamier and many of mine were bigger than jumbos!) are a HUGE draw for me as well as the color. Everywhere I look everyone says that marans' eggs are not for eating because they are just too darned expensive (in France they sell for around $40.00 a dozen, not hatching eggs, just eating eggs) but I used to eat mine all the time and boy are they good! So I'm afraid I'm pretty fixated on the marans for now. That may change though! Folks are always tempting me with new breeds.

Sheryl you are correct. They are extremely heat tolerant but don't do well in freezing weather. And yes they are known for being one of the worst breeds for temperament. Very nervous birds. I greatly admire the folks with the patience to breed these birds. They were in danger of becoming extinct and are still considered very, very rare. Now there are quite a few dedicated folks working hard to bring this bird back. They are supposedly fantastic layers. Laying a lot more eggs than the marans, by far. Lacey is right though, if you take your time, sit with your birds a lot and stay calm around them they will learn to accept you and won't be so nervous.

I'm not that patient though. I guess I'm one of the flightier breeds.

Uh Oh! I have roo in the bunch. I got the chicks moved outside this week and was hanging out with them today. I picked up my son's favorite chick to check out it's incoming quills and all around health and noticed that it's comb was a bit larger than the others. I then noticed that it's comb had 3 rows to it. It is now a he. Well, it always was a he, but you know what I mean. So.....anyone want a free black and white Ameraucana Roo. He hatched on August 20th and seems to be a happy, healthy little fella, but I just don't want a rooster in my flock. I figured if anyone on here wants him I will give him away. I live in Carson City. I could meet someone in Reno if helps place him. I am not in a hurry to get rid of him, but would love to see him find a home soon. Will get pics up tomorrow. Thanks -Ed

Ed, you might just want to wait until he's older to make sure. I dont think you can sex Amerauanas by how many rows thier comb has.

Actually that's a pretty reliable method for sexing Ameraucanas, at least in my limited experience.

I'd like to see a photo of him, I have some black Ams but I've never seen a black and white.

ETA: I might be interested in him myself...

lol really? I never knew that. In the breed/gender area, everyone is always just trying to guess like you would a normal chicken. Can you show me pics of male vs female? Ive got Ameraucanas, I'd like to learn that trick.

This lady called me up a few minutes ago really angry about my eggs. She said they werent fresh, and when I asked her what she meant, she said I processed them. I was trying to figure out what she meant by 'processed', and when I asked her to explain she politely informed me that 'processed eggs' are white, where as 'farm fresh eggs' are brown, and that some of my eggs were proccessed and some werent, and she only wanted fresh eggs.. Oh gosh.

I told her some lay white, some lay brown, and some lay green/blue. She's still unsure, but she decided to take my advice. Ahh, best phone call ever.
