Nevadans?

I already have flighty birds and I can't imagine having more chickens flying over the enclosure.

Sunny, what a great letter you wrote to the County.

Missy & Sierra - you both should publish your novels. You can publish them through companies that do it from the internet and you get royalties. It's a lot different these days since you don't need to print out your novels and mail them in to the publishing companies.

Wow, I have missed a lot! I just did my recent chick order and I'm up to fifty chicks. My kids just did their first poultry show and had a blast! My mother came a long with us and now she has chicken fever, this is some contagious stuff.

No they're standards just smaller then my Orpingtons and Reds and Cochins. I also have Golden Crested Polish too, and they're very mild mannered.

Ha ha. Standards with major attitude! Well Orps and Cochins are so mellow. I've never had an ornery Red either but I've heard from some folks who say they have. I guess even the polish are feisty by comparison. I will be getting some other varieties of Polish later from Pam.

Thank you Sheryl! Regarding high fliers, my run will be covered so I am not at all worried about them liking to fly. In fact I am going to add some branches to the middle tent posts of my run so the fliers have some roosts to enjoy outside as well. I am picking up some Yokohama eggs this weekend from SewandGrow and they love tall outdoor perches so these are kinda a must now.

Yes Seth they are guaranteed. They not only guarantee them for arrival but they extend that to 48 hours after shipping. I'm used to having to call from the PO to let them know if any didn't make it. It will be nice having a couple more days. I've never lost more than 2 anyway and that one time the breeder put in 3 extras so I was still covered. I'm worried about the chicks suffering, not about the money. I hate to be cold and I don't imagine baby chicks like it any better than I do.

Sunny the group body heat should help she might have added extras

Oh yes the body heat helps. You couldn't ship them anytime without that but if it's really cold out and a dock worker doesn't pay attention and leaves them on the cold cement dock for more than a few minutes they will start to lose heat rapidly. I would have placed a few of those hand warmers in there under some cardboard to give them some radiant heat for several hours anyway before they have to depend on their reserves. I use them a lot when we travel with chicks, those and Kim's rice sock trick. At least during cold weather.

Of course I did get a spring order once when we were having a late snow storm and that was the one I mentioned before that had 2 dead chicks in the order. The rest did seem stressed but I got them under a heat lamp and I also placed a heating pad (set to low) underneath their box on one side so the really cold ones could warm up easier and within 20 minutes they were all perked up and we lost no others from that shipment.

As warm as it's been lately I think it will be about the same conditions as that hatch. I wished I'd asked about a tracking # when they called...
