I have one exceptional BR hen, Groana..she's the boss lady and takes care of everything..but the others just do not have the individuality that the RIR's do and I hear that BO's do to, Also they are not as friendly,,they don't like to be messed with or even to get close to..whereas my RIR's all want to get on my lap and they each have distinct behaviors/attitudes/personalities...if my flock were larger I guess I wouldn't care...but I do want to try some other breeds...I am still very new at this!

One of my BR's is also the boss of my flock. She likes to jump up on my lap but puts the other pullets in their place. I have found my BO's to be the friendliest. I have 4 BOs. They all jump on my lap and like to be petted. My kids love to pick up the BO's --usually the only ones that let the kids pick them up. I would definitely recommend BO's to you.

The only two I can really speak for personalities, so far, are Delawares and faverolles. The faverolles are sweet, shy, and quiet. They very rarely take treats from my hand, but are nice and complacent when I pet them. They also don't rush up to me to be held. My Delaware, however, is very intelligent. She leads everyone else around, more because she knows the best places for food, and is bold enough to lead. But she's not bossy at all. Sometimes I'll sneak quietly up and peek through a hole in the fence, and she'll perk up her head and try to find who's watching her. Very intuitive. She's also smart enough to expect any kind of special treatment, even after getting it once. About 8am she's complaining because that's when I usually let her out of the coop.

Wow! I missed the 10,000th post! Who got it? Man, ya miss a week or two and suddenly you're hundreds of posts behind. I'm not even gonna try to catch up!

I really like my Dels too, Missy. A guy at my church has a beautiful Delaware roo. He's gonna bring it by this Spring and we'll put him in the brood pen with my two Dels for a couple of weeks. So hopefuly I can hatch some nice babies!

I am gonna agree with everything said here. My BR, Agnes was head hen before she died. she was a good head hen though...a fair one i guess. And my delaware hands down has the funniest personality and has got to be the smartest. shes so cool. shes always the one i will find peeking in the sliding glass window wanting to know whats going on inside. She never squats for me but always lets me pick her up and never makes me chase her around.

Hi Steff!!! Hey I've missed seeing you on BYC! Haven't seen you for quite a while now. I understand about needing some green stuff in the yard. Believe me!

Thanks for the compliment on my avatar. That was taken in Ecuador last May. I love to look at this pic cause it reminds me of how relaxed we were and how good we felt during that trip. We even looked younger cause we were so relaxed! LOL

How are all your girls doing? Still giving you eggs?

Everytime you talk about Ecuador, I think, "I really need to go there someday." I'll have to save my pennies!

The girls are still doing fine. Goldy and Freckles are big and healthy. Goldy is laying periodically, but Freckles has taken the winter off. Tatertot has not layed in years. The two Barnies that I got from that foursome with you are doing fine, and very happy to be rid of the rooster. They are done moulting, and are now just waiting for spring. The babies all grew up, and now are the main layers. There are plenty of eggs out there, even with the winter rest. Once they all get back at it, I'll have to sell eggs. Even now, I always have several dozen in the fridge.

Let me know if you and Steve are down in this area. Tim and I will have to try to catch up with you.

Haha, my landlady remarked two years ago that it was almost impossible to keep a nice lawn with dogs and kids. I breathed a huge sigh of relief because she has one dog and NO kids... at the time we had 3 dogs and 2 kids. The lawn is now... well, I'm not hoping for much. We have a nice lawn in the front, and lots of garden space. When I take pics of the backyard, I use certain camera angles.
