I used to get it for .25 when I picked it up at the farm with my own container. Even with 800% inflation I wouldn't expect to pay more than $2 a gallon. The farm has no shipping/transport costs. Nor are they paying employee, mortgage and extra utility costs to keep a store up and running. The milk may be extra creamy (as they claim) but that doesn't justify the cost.

That's actually how I feel about eggs and about half of the organic produce on the market. Though I believe in the value of our eggs, when it comes down to the cost of feeding a family I'm not willing to break the bank for something that's not going to poison my family if I buy an inferior product. I also don't buy organic very often, for that same reason. If I can get rid of the skin/husk and avoid any contamination, cheaper means I can buy more. And though I feel differently about grass-fed beef... when I only have $5, that will buy a pound of conventional hamburger.

We loved meeting you too Pam! We will have to come visit again. No we hadn't picked up the chicks yet when we met you. We picked them up in Grass Valley after we left your place. Can't wait to set the eggs we got from you!!! Such beauties!

Congrats to everyone who got new chicks! That is awesome!

Ron if you get the BO roo I would recommend a permanent run and coop that is separate. That way you can make sure your BOs stay BOs and not EEs plus Poppy will not let any other roo mate with the girls and he will expend so much energy making sure of this that his fertility will go way down. And rarely does mixing two grown roos work. They will most likely fight.

well, I finally went to bed last night after checking on the chicks in the garage a bunch of times. They look just fine out there. They slept next to each other but didn't look huddled up like they were cold. The big girls in the coop are not thrilled with all this wind but they will be fine.

So after inquiring (again, I have told him several times but his listening skills aren't always up to par) about the various breeds of chicks we're getting this spring, my husband asked if we're getting any "big hair" chickens. He said it in Spanish but that's the gist of what it means. So digging further, he meant Polish. I showed him some pictures and he particularly likes the buff laced Polish. Well, if he had mentioned this a few months ago I could have added some to my ideal order but they are all sold out until May. So the polish will have to wait for now. Maybe Polish are the gateway chicken for his chicken addiction.

I love that! Big hair chickens!

It reminds me of a pair of black and white polish my cousin and I had as kids. Their names were Trish and Tony and they were too much fun. Maybe they will be his gateway chicken!

I do believe there are many of us who would love to share a cow with you, me included but do you realize you must milk them twice a day every day and you can't miss a 1/2 day? LOL

I think you already knew that and I would love to but I can't go every single day either and that just sucks. I can not imagine paying $6 a gallon for milk at all. Did they say how much the buy in is on a cow of theirs? Then you get the milk for free so to speak.

I have a small side yard (15X50) where my coop/run (6X20) are and I'd like to plant some forage for my 11 girls. I have 6 Black Stars and 5 California Whites. What could I plant as forage for them. I'm also considering a screened frame (don't know what they're called) to put down over some of the new growth so the chooks don't eat em down to the ground. The 2X6 frame w/screen will let the new shoots get a good start and the hens can eat what grows up through the screen. I'd like to plant the whole area, which doesn't seem like much. What have you fellow BYCers had good luck with in this Reno climate?
