Nevadans?

Sunny, I'd love to hear you lizard stories!
Chickee, your chicks are adorable, and those laced birds are Gorgeous!
Horseshowmom, did you find a solution to the brooder getting filled up? We were thinking next time we will just make a brooder out of plywood, since it's like $10 a sheet and we could make a huge one that we could take apart after its use.
We realized our now about 6 week old chicks are mostly roos...

We are only sure one is a gal. Lots of pink combs and wattles all around.

We're trying to decide if we should find ourselves some sexed chicks... and what to do with 6/7 little roos.

sorry about all the roos! making a plywood brooder sounds like a good idea.

We found an old cabinet at Habitat for Humanities, will make adjustments and put the chicks in there when necessary. This process is a learning experience. Have to laugh as my daughter is looking for more chicks... OMG! 27 is plenty!

on the cabinet brooder. sounds like your daughter's been bitten by the chicken bug! she's in good company!

No. Blue Laced Red Wyandottes come in 3 colors. Blue Laced Red, Black Laced Red and White Laced Red (called Splash.) I have one of each color in these chicks. You will have a chance of getting any one of these 3 colors in the chicks you are getting from me.

Here are pictures of some of my hens that you may be getting chicks from~

White Laced Red~ "Splash"

Black Laced Red~

Blue Laced Red~

I'd be delighted to have any of those colors! Crossing my fingers on a high pullet ratio!

We have a solution for too many roos... it's usually the solution that the "free rooster" people on Craigslist aren't interested in. Only with common breeds, though. I can't imagine sacrificing a designer breed to the stewpot. So any roosters I get from Candy's babies will be sold or gifted to people who appreciate them. A RIR that turns into a roo, though... that sounds tasty. Oh crud... that's the one Sahara wants. Jeesh, no winning here.

And people think they have a moral dilemma after watching Food, Inc. and deciding if they want to become vegetarian or just eat the meat that doesn't even resemble meat anymore.

We probably won't have much of a problem with Sahara's RIR if it's a roo, though. She was right by my side during Extra Crispy's demise, offering to do it for me.

Daniel - how's your dad and daughter doing?

You are very lucky if you have dirt in Reno. I have never worked the ground nearer to the river or south of town but I suspect it changes drastically i that direction.

Sand will eventually break up clay soil. You just want to do it slowly. like a half inch of sand or so each year and then till that in. Let mother nature do her thing for a while and then do it again. I guess clay particals have a charge to them that cause them to be attracted to each other. dissipating that charge takes a while. That is the simplified form and how I understand it anyway. The soil test I had done shows the soil to be high Ph (8.1) and that is not good. adding lots of organic matter will help lower it but also causes other problems. Such as the calcium build up I mentioned before. Calcium can be leached from the soil but it also takes time. At any rate you can do it just go slowly until you know the effect the sand and compost have on your soil and plants. and know it may get better next year. Or the year after etc.

My daughter went to court last week for child support. results where good but could have been better. I am going back to court with her on Monday to get a permanent TPO. We are hoping for one year. We have yet to find out what will happen with his charges. This will be the ex boyfriends second domestic battery charge and we found out he was also arrested for false imprisonment. I am not sure exactly what he finally was charged with. We are working on the court paper to file for full custody of the kids and a new decision on child support once custody is set. We have a couple we have known for years that just went through this with their daughter that are helping us get the paper work done. So far so good I just wish it was moving faster. Daughter is standing firm about not speaking to ex though and that is very good.

Dad's tissue sample came back showing nothing but normal lung tissue. That really is not good because they know for a fact there is something in there they just did not get any of it when they took the tissue sample. He went in yesterday for more tests and they are talking about doing something called a "Wash" I have no idea what that means. My wife Kim came rushing through trying to get back out the door to get to work and explained about that much to me as she went. I have not seen her long enough to get fully caught up yet. Dad says he feels fine so that is good.

I am not sure if anyone can help me with this or not. But I am looking for 15 to 30 yards of compost, composted manure or whatever I can get delivered to Stagecoach. I am willing to pay reasonable prices for both the compost and the delivery. If anyone knows of a source for lots of compost please let me know. I need it by June 5th.

They're in Minden. I've bought their stuff at Whole Foods and Earth Day, and don't know if they deliver in bulk, but it's made locally.

Nice score! It sounds like chicken math is really at work at your house! And like there's a whole lot of cuteness in one place.

Yeah, we are probably going to end up with a real big Easter BBQ. I told my BF if he starts it, I'll clean them. I'm a meat-eating biologist, so I can handle it. It's just all new and I was prepared for a few, but 7 sounds like a big production.

We got a new color of egg today. It's the egg in the middle and its creamy colored! the color didn't come through exactly right on the photo. I guess it's one of the EEs since the rest of my pullets are brown layers.

Hope things continue to improve with your daughter's situation and hope they can get some answers for your dad.

Do you think that might be a wyandotte egg? I looked it up, and some of the pics are about that shade.
