Nevadans?

good luck with your broodies, vegaschick and LVBirdLover.

Kim, I haven't added ACV as part of our health program, but it looks like I need to start. I've only taken it once, and didn't know it had to be a certain kind, so I took generic ACV. After coughing and gagging I decided the benefits from that bottle wouldn't be so great.

If I had all of my chickens in a smaller space, my little welsummer would be featherless. But they run around the whole yard, and she just chooses to go to different areas. And there's plenty of perch space at night. When I get my 2 silkies, I think it should be fine for that reason. If not, I have the old coop that's perfect for them.
I have recently started taking some unfiltered ACV in hopes it will help my sinuses. so far so good. haven't put any in the chickens' water but I have seen that some people do that.

Hoo boy! I'm pooped. I think I'll try to actually sleep tonight. lol Not that I'll follow through with that but you never know! G'night all!
hope you're not reading this until the morning! Have a good sleep. I guess hatching chicks is exhausting.

Well I did peek in around 10:30 but I didn't respond so I didn't get myself wide awake before settling in. I dropped off shortly after and slept very well last night. Yea!

I would like maran but are they to big for bantie? it would also might work if i can't get a ppullet to get a chick or 2 wink wink nudge nudge cough cough *sunny*

These marans are really big birds. I mean they are nothing like a Jersey Giant or even an English Orp but I wouldn't mix a roo with the banties they are just a little too assertive. Most banty roos are assertive as well and they would probably fight. I can set aside a couple of little pullet chicks for you once I hatch out a few. I will be setting some marans eggs on the 17th. Some of them are pretty easy to tell boy from girl right away At least if you look closely right when the tail feathers start to come in. The last 4 marans I hatched were boys and you could tell pretty much from day one! Those combs were huge! lol

So I am setting 2 pullets aside for you or do you still want that grown pullet from my flock? Oh I forgot to tell you. I noticed last weekend that some of them are getting the eye color change now so whoever told me it happens by 4 months was just a little off. She would be very nice for showing I think. You'll need to study the SOP for marans (bring a printout with you) and come and look at her. I'll let you decide since I don't show and my knowledge is limited.

...
I have had a 2wk with a day-old chick. They were great together. Then after another week I got a few (4) more day-olds. They were also good, but when I added a few more a few weeks later...not so good. I think that the trick is to make sure the littles outnumber the older chick, and I'd not try it with a chick more than 3 wks old. Hope that makes sense. Actually, out of all those chicks...the only one to go broody was the older chick. I raised her to be a momma!

I agree. Up to 3 weeks in age difference can work together but it's important that the smaller ones outnumber the older ones. Genny told me this when I had 3 boxes of chicks that were 2 & 1/2 weeks apart (but a huge difference in size already). Since I had so many more of the younger chicks she said it should be fine. I made one big brooder and added them all together and it worked out great!

Sheryl and Missy I hope you have a nice easy drive to pick up chicks. Even in a light snow the last time through it was a nice drive. Very pretty scenery, you'll enjoy it! Say "Hi" to Candy for me. Can't wait to see my new girls!

Hi LV-Bird-Lover. Great to see ya on here! Hope you find some new chicks and a good home for your EE cockerel there. He's got some beautiful colors!

glad you got a good night's sleep, sunny! I went to bed at a good time as well but I'm still tired. Maybe I still have a deficit to make up.

Cute bunny, Seth!

Since I'm going to have only 4 of the younger chicks and more 3 week old chicks, I decided to keep them in separate brooders for awhile. I'm thinking of picking up ceramic heat emitters, though. Will they need a separate light at night or is it good for them to get used to the dark early on? I got my big rubbermaid brooders cleaned out yesterday. I need to pick up some more shavings today so they'll be ready. I"m going to move the chicks into the bigger setup so the smaller brooder can be for the recently hatched ones.

Well, maybe a little more caffeine is in order to get my blood running today... My sister is coming for a week-long visit tomorrow so there's lots of cleaning to do after work tonight. Luckily Jose is a good house husband and will do quite a bit of cleaning but there are lots of cluttery things around that I need to take care of.

Well I hope you have a great visit! Doesn't sound like you are going to get caught up on your sleep anytime soon. Oh well, caffiene works pretty well too (as a short term solution anyway).

Chicks don't need a separate light on at night if you have the ceramic repti heaters or an Ecoglow unit or something like that. If you worry about it you can get the red repti bulbs at the pet store that are only 25 watts. The soft light doesn't disturb them as much but they can still see to get to food, water and roosts.

I also use spot light bulbs for light (since the ceramic bulbs don't put out light) and extra warmth for the chicks when I put them out at the chicken house when they are older and they actually prefer the spot light. Go figure

That's what we used for our first brooder... it was leftover from my husband's first snake. Worked great and didn't get too hot.

OK I agreed to join the Easter hatch for Kim and now I see that I am the only Nevadan on the map! Yes they are a little obsessed over there, they have a map with everyone's approximate location. Anyway, can I really be the only Nevadan in the Easter Hatch? Feeling a little lonely here.

Just in case anyone else is hatching too...

They are setting chicken eggs on the 17th but that isn't a hard date. In fact you don't even have to be hatching to join in but it would be hard to resist if you were on that thread with all the talk of setting eggs.

OMG! They are rubbing off on me. Here I am trying to recruit hatchers!!!

No incubator, no room for one... but I could stick one in my bra, like I've read that some people try.

That would be hard to explain... I'm doing a massage, and an egg rolls out onto the client. Uh... I was trying to hatch it? Then, I'll be at the gym, and it'll fly out and hit some musclehead.

At least go join the contests! Which reminds me. I'm doing on next week and offering a dozen hatching eggs. There's still one GFM up for grabs if your post is the right number. That should be soon cause I doubt they made them all to high since you never know how many posts you're going to get.

Seth I showed your pic to one of my daughter's and your twins sister. His sister wanted to know when that pic was taken because she had never seen it. LOL She thought it was her brother and one of my rabbits.

Yeah bra babies! There are so many women that warm up sick chicks that way they should have their own thread. lol
