Nevadans?

How about Bad, bad Leroy Brown! The baddest chicken in the whole darn town!

I'm loving the chick pics. I'm sad I'm away from mine!

Elizabeth those are great pics! i think #1 is a definite rooster. Look at those LEGS!

OMG Aubrey those are some fantastic pics!!! I love the little bio on each one. Sooo cool! And, yes, I did get a lot more boys than girls but I do have 8 girls so I have enough for the three I promised to you, Pam and Kim. That will still leave me with 5 girls. Now what to do with 12 boys?!!! That's always the problem isn't it? lol

Thanks for the tip on cheap potting soil Missy. Awww I had a chicken named Sesame before! In fact he was Poppy's brother. The same Poppy that Ron has now. I was into the seed theme then. Although both of them were black so Sesame didn't really fit. I still like the name though.

Thanks Elizabeth! I just love them!

Seth I love the name scar brutus snaggle! Where the heck did that come from?

Hi Stevie! How's it going?

Chickee I'm glad you are feeling better! I agree the GCM roos are gorgeous! We just have a lot of folks that live in the city here and roos aren't very welcomed by some neighbors.

I fell in love with Kirstie's GCM roosters! They are gorgeous!! Your chick is adorable!!

Sounds to me like you need a Ko Shamo rooster. Are you sure it was a Raccoon? They rarely kill one chicken, instead killing the whole flock for the fun of it. If just the one Show girl was taken I would bet it was a hawk. I read on BYC that a hawk swooped down to attack a flock and the Ko Shamo rooster spurred it right through the eye killing it

The last showgirl i believe was attacked by a cat, she had a bite mark on her side :(
When we first moved into this house my showgirl coop was attacked by coons. Petey and priscilla survived, but one other died before the dog chased them off. Since then i have lost my red crested red polish to a coon before we got the new big safe coop. One night there was a fire in our coop and as we were moving all the girls inside the dog was working his butt off to keep the coons at bay as they were jumping into our yard from all sides. Coons are a huge problem in my neighbrhood, i hate em!
Also we want a big roo to keep the dog in check. hes getting a littl too comfortable around the girls and i dont like it. I like when he is scared of them better, haha.

A shamo is a great idea though that i hadnt even thought about! Maybe if it doesnt work out with butchy snaggly scarheadface we will go that route, thanks!

do you have some gcm roos? id LOVE to see pics!

I tried to email some pictures to myself. Most didn't even translate through the media. This is what I could save... sorry about the tragic image quality. I had some good ones of Sesame but they didn't go through.

Moving to a new brooder: Save me, mommy! Can you tell there are 14 in there?

Mr. Something-To-Prove. Is he maybe black split? I'm just judging on the legs. But Elizabeth's very obvious cuckoo-patterned chicks have bare legs. Again, I'm confused.

Another picture of Mr. STP. He had no interest in holding still for pictures. You can see the brown mossy banding on the feathers... barely. I have a black split here with NO mossiness on the feathers... they're all black, with a different texture. It looks like I need some education in bird identification.

I don't have any GCMs . . . yet

I had some of Kirstie's chicks here for a week that my brother hatched from her eggs. He gave the chicks back to her to rebuild her flock after all her GCMs were killed by dogs that got into their pen. I fell in love with the chicks! One looked like your chick and it was my favorite.

Oh, man! That is scary about your raccoon problem!! You DO need one mean rooster! Our problem is with Bobcats. Before I added some height to the fence and angled it out, one went over the fence and through 3 strands of electric wire, grabbed my 7 pound blue Wyandotte rooster and went back through the electric wire with him

When he couldn't get my chickens, he nabbed a BIG, full grown wild Turkey not far from the chicken pen. I love the Bobcats and all our wildlife here (except Raccoons after seeing the carnage after they attacked our daughter's flock) and just do the best I can to protect my chickens. I don't care much for skunks, but kind of warmed up to one that appeared on our doorstep. I came to the front door (glass) and here is this half grown skunk sitting on the door mat scratching itself like a cat! We had a heck of a time getting it to leave! We finally chased it off, but I think it has adopted us, because it still hangs out around the house

Great pics again Aubrey! I always enjoy looking at your photos. Actually you all do great with your pics. I do need to get some more this year.

Sorry you are away from your family Stevie! Hang in there.

Good night all. Have a great night and great day tomorrow.

I am not as familiar with the Marans since I don't own any, but the chick in the last picture looks like Kirstie's chicks that I have seen that are Black Copper Marans. Because these are project chicks you could end up with an array of colors. Some clean and feather legged also.

On your chicks from me the pullets will have shorter, square tails and the roosters tails longer with a point. Loved seeing a picture of them!

You too Sheryl! Thanks.

So does anyone have any good ideas on how to rabbit proof a large garden area? Cheaply?

Cheap chicken wire should do it. And it doesn't need to be that high. When I lived against Huffaker Hill in South Reno, using a netting that was only 12 inches high and it kept them out so 24" wire should be fine. But I had to seal up all cracks, leaving no gaps.
