Nevadans?

Happy Birthday Taylor! I can't think of a better way to celebrate your last "teen" birthday, then a 3 hour ride with your best friend! Sounds like you know how to celebrate!

Thank you. Yeah after I had my cheese cake I went out and practiced roping my new calf head I got for my birthday.

OMGosh, cheesecake and roping! Two of my favorite things. There is nothing like a good roping horse under you! At this point, I'd be happy with any horse under me and as soon as my spine surgeon OKs it, I'll pick one of my pasture ornaments and go for a ride!

Congrats on the new calf head, is it mechanical? Either way, throwing a rope is plain fun!

Geez, sorry Tyler!! I don't think this is the first time I've called you Taylor!!! See what happens when the "teen" leaves your number!!! I'm so bad with names to begin with and then the wrong name sticks! Sorry!

OMG Happy Birthday

Happy birthday, Tyler!

Peep_Show, thanks for the advice. I've actually seen her stuff on Amazon and put it on my wishlist.

Does anyone have any extra used feed sacks lying around? I'm looking for the loose-weave ones, like the Farmer's (cheap brand) 50lb bags. I bought some feed 2 days ago and gave the sacks to a friend so she could grow her potatoes, then realized my last round of potatoes are very sprouted and the hens won't go through 100lbs of feed before I have to plant them. These work well in reusable grocery bags, too, but the feed sacks hold twice as much, so they have the potential to produce more potatoes. Cloth gunnysacks would work well, too. Just not the ones that are woven then covered in a layer of plastic, like the Flock Raiser bags.
All I have is Flock Raiser bags but not enough for all these potatoes!!! I think I'm gonna have potatoes coming out my ears!
sorry missy i only get layena anymore, but mark and i do keep all of our feed bags (catfood AND dogfood also) so if you change your mind...
I wouldn't mind a few! I have a lot more potatoes to put in and as long as I poke lots of holes in the bottom for drainage they work quite well.

I'll wait til Missy gets what she wants though.

Hahaha!!! That's his alter ego! He goes by Taylor sometimes. It can be confusing at times.

Go for it, Sunny. I still have the Flock Raiser bags from the feed I bought on Wednesday, and some horse feed bags from manure a friend gave me, if I decide to use those. And I just might. They don't have the loose weave that I want, but yesterday I went to Lowe's and saw some "bargain potato grow bags" that were made of a tighter weave. And all the watering will probably make that outer layer of plastic peel off anyway. And in the super hot summer, I might just be thankful for the tighter weave. This whole "potatoes in recycled bags" idea is so new anyway. It worked so well in the buckets, and those have no breathability except the top and the bottom.

So far, we have at least 100 feet of ground planted with potatoes, 12 reusable bags, enough potatoes for a round of 7 more bags, and I gave seed potatoes to two sisters and two friends to try to spread the insanity. My husband asked why I ordered so many. It was such a good deal! 2.5lbs of certified seed potatoes, in varieties you can't get in reno, for less than $6, plus shipping????? And when I ordered, I actually trimmed 4 varieties off the order to stop myself from going crazy, and just got 6. In reality, I didn't know exactly what 2.5 equated to as far as production, but let's just say I'll have potatoes to barter. Since we don't have a root cellar, I'm going to get some of those under-the-bed Rubbermaid organizers, poke air holes in them, and put them under everyone's beds to store. Maybe a crate or two in the closets.

They say, in good soil with good cultivation, a pound of seed will produce up to 10 pounds of potatoes. Well, I ordered 14 pounds from Maine Potato Lady.

And also... after ordering these from MPL, I stumbled across a site from a farm in Fremont, Idaho, which is a town that played my hometown football team in high school. His were more expensive... $9 per half pound with free shipping... and I ordered 3 more new varieties. A month later they didn't arrive and customer service wasn't responding to my emails, so I thought I'd been robbed and was about to forget about these. I had more than enough potatoes already. But I got a call two days ago and the guy said he didn't know what had gone wrong in the shipping department, but he still had my address on file in my order, so when he got back to the farm he'd ship some off. So they should be here Monday or Tuesday. If they aren't sprouted yet, that's super awesome, because then I can do another round of bags, with a late harvest to offset all the others.

So in 3 months or so, if anyone needs organic potatoes and wants to do some bartering, let me know.

Here is the first round of potatoes, planted about a month ago, in one feedbag and one reusable grocery bag. These are from a couple of viking purple pieces I got from Sunny. As they grow, I'll just unroll the bag and add dirt, until the dirt is up to the top.

And the latest pic of my hatch from Candy. These are just some of them. I'm still determining, but my pullet estimate is:
2/3 buff x wheaten. The one with his head sticking out from under the ladder is the cockerel. They're all really sweet-natured.
1/5 lavender (maybe 2, one is still a little iffy). They're all still a little flighty, but not aggressive.
1/2 black split (Punk isn't developing like a rooster, but if he's a pullet, I can't keep him. He'll be too aggressive. The other pullet is a sweetie, though.)
1/2 BLRW... MAYBE. One comb is developing slower, but the other is definitely a roo.
0/1 blue wheaten. Poor Blue.

okie dokie sunny :)

Hey so this mornign I woke up late...like...VERY LATE. so late that when i saw where the sun was i was absolutely shocked. It was one of those things where when i looked at the clock i jumped out of bed as if i were late for work or something. Yes it was 11:00. omg thats what happens when markie is outta town for the weekend. I stay up way too late them laze around allllllll morning.

anywhoo... the point of the story is that i rushed outside to free the girls from their rubbermaid prison, and when i opened the door they were all panting and it was SOOOOOOOO hot in there. like, the het punched me in the face, thats how hot it was. After i got the door and windows open it cooled down pretty quickly but it kills me to think how long the girls were in there like that, we usually let them out around 8 or earlier. So i was wondering about ideas to help keep it cooler? obviously im going to need to install some more vents but i need a kind of quicker solution for now. Marks gone and i work from 5:00 am -11:30 am tomorrow. I cant let the girls out that early but i CANNOT leave them in there until 11:30 without something to cool down the coop. Im thinking i will defnitely buy some nuts and bolts and try my hand at moutning hardware cloth over the windows so i can just keep them open, then also i was going to see about mybe finding a small fan that i can fit into one of the little slots in the window to blow outside air in. i dont know...i just feel so bad right now...

Missy your potatoes look great!

I would put a small fan in facing out. It will pull the warm air out of the coop and cooler air from outside will rush in. Also when you have to leave for work really early you can put some frozen bottles of water in there and frozen fruit can be put out for them as well. Jeez I had no idea the rubbermaid coops got so hot! Get going on putting that hardware cloth in too. The open windows will help a lot!

thanks sunny. I did put a fan in two fans in there- one by the window and one facing into the nest box. Poor little suckers! maybe we can put an out fan in the south window and an in fan in the north window. ...

Seriously folks. These girls are OUT OF CONTROL. I have had such a pleasant and mellow day today and just thought i would enjoy myself a nice bowl of chili beans on the back patio. Boy was i wrong. the girls had other ideas. It started with toe biting and ended with naners INSIDE my bowl and me being overtaken by the whole flock. I guess long story short- they won and im sad :(
