Your chicks are looking great! You have 3 beautiful pullets

They will get even prettier with age. The BLRWs are slow to get their lacing and big, fluffy bodies, but I can tell from experience that yours is going to be VERY nice!

I'll bet the frizzled tendencies that your BR hen has is what breeders bred together to develop the total body frizzle on their poultry. She is cute!

I talked to Jim and he said that the neighbors have given their permission to use the whole area in front of their bays for the swap.  Those businesses aren't open on weekends so it's perfect!  You guys should have plenty of room to spread out.

yes bring your own table chairs and shade just incase! We will hopefully have a tent for shade and Jim said we can set up a club table just inside the warehouse. Also we will have wire show cages to rent if you don't have your own.... It will be fun!

I promised pictures that I've taken in the last few weeks. Sorry it took me this long to post them. I took some more of the teenagers that are in with the older chickens today since I noticed the ones I took a few weeks ago didn't really come out well.

Here's Wynnie still sitting on her duck eggs and taking care of the 2 ducklings she hatched and one from the incubator. Missy, you have the ducklings that Wynnie hatched herself.

Here's my garlic. It's almost 3' tall now. It looks like I'll have some great garlic this fall.



You can't really tell here but this strawberry patch is full of strawberries right now. John's making a bird
cover so I will be able to make jam this year. I haven't been able to make jam in over 15 years because
the birds always ate the strawberries but no more.



Strawberry protector being built right now. It will be over the strawberries in about 2 days. The rest of
the garden will all be in later today and tomorrow. This is going to be really huge with the corn, squash
and beans we are going to put in here. The squash is all ready for the garden and the beans and corn
seeds will be planted with them. It's the 3 sister method that was posted on here a while back.

Wow, Mo and Harmony are so big! And feathered out beautifully! My babies are doing well, still a little needy but getting more independent. They like walking with me to take Sahara to school, all cuddled up with their heads tucked beneath my neck. We stopped by Garden #2 on the way home, and I made them a mud puddle while watering, then fed them purslane that I pulled from between the onions. The bigger ducks have finally figured out the coop, and are going in there to eat now.

Your garlic looks great! I ordered some for this fall, some rare Russian varieties. (Georgian Fire, and a few others.) We're excited. I might have ordered too much again, as I have never planted garlic before. So if I have extra, I'll let people know.

My strawberries have all wandered out of the bed, except for 3 plants. We pretty much keep them as a sacrifice to the birds, anyway. So I planted my tomatillos where they were.

I'm so glad your lavender turned out to be a pullet!

WOW that is a lot of eggs! Good for them, over achievers LOL! Yes you should only wait 48 hours because at that point the hen will usually be compelled to leave the nest because the first hatched chicks will be ready to move around. But it you have them locked in with food and water you could wait alittle longer I guess. The other suggestion would be to take one hen and all the chicks hatched from both hens and move them and put any remaining eggs under the other broody. Might work.Keep us posted and I will help with advice as I can, I am not an expert but have had trials and turbulations with broodies. I have 2 Cochins setting on eggs(one hen keeps stealing eggs from unfer my muscovy hen) but the other day I randomly checked and pulled out 3 chicks, since she still had eggs left I put the chicks in with the brooder, she is in an unprotected busy busy coop with teenagers, and ducklings and fullsized muscovies so I didn't want to chance it. I just had a bad experience with my Muscovy hen hatched 10 ducklings, I kept them locked up with her for 2 weeks and then let her out with in 48 hours she was down to 6 chicks, one was squished under a piece of fencing and 3 simply disapeared and she is a tough mommy! So no matter what you do something could always happen. Lets hope yours is perfectly fine. and yes it is too late to move them. It is best to move a broodie early in the setting process, once it is close to hatch time the eggs shouldn't be moved as the chicks are getting into hatching position..... Happy Hatching!!!

I know, lots huh? They've only pushed one out. Some bad news though.....last night I found one of the girls sitting on the layers eggs. I've been removing them a couple of times a day because I heard they can get confused and start sitting on the wrong eggs. I think what happened is that after we put up the hardware cloth, this girl had to go past the more aggressive of the two to return to her eggs after taking a break and the other chicken wouldn't let her pass so she just went to the next best thing......I put her back on her eggs and she didn't go out today when the other hen did but I have no idea how long she was off them. That happened at day 19, whats the chances we lost them?

When the other hen left her nest this morning I checked for pips but nothing, we're day 20. I did notice two of my Polish eggs tucked off to the side in the box and cool to the touch. Guess she doesn't want them....although I've seen other eggs off to the side and then brought back in the nest.

Thanks for the idea to move one mom with all chicks and give the other all the remaining eggs.....just hope I get some babies after all this.

Oh my gosh....I heard all this racket up in the coops so, thinking I may have some chicks hatched and the moms are fighting I run...well, with my back that means and stepped quickly.....anyway, to my surprise the racket was coming from the Polish pen! I have 4 roosters and four nesting boxes.....there was one ROO in each box and all the hens were on top of the boxes and everyone was singing the egg song! Wish I would have gotten a picture! I was SO surprised to see the boys just sitting in each nest as happy as can be!

I needed this laugh.....my 11 year old Cocker Spaniel is very ill and the surgery to save her would be about $1,000 that I don't have.....I'm praying the antibiotics cure her but I'm worried sick and have been

for the last couple of days, praying I'm making the right decision and wondering if I should opt for the surgery........

that must have been a sight to see! Sorry about your dog. It's so hard with pets and tight finances on top of that. I hope she can recover! I took my 13 year old cat in yesterday for his regular check and he has lost 2 pounds in the last year which is quite a lot for a cat. 20% of his body weight. so i got the senior lab work done and we're waiting to hear if that picked up on anything. I lost his sister 2 years ago to cancer. A few months before that she had $1000 surgery to remove bladder stones. There was nothing much we could do on the cancer, though.

I will be bringing a couple of Blue Fawn Call ducks and a little gimpy Call duck that I didn't have the heart to cull(I never do I try to save anything with a birth defect unless they appear to be suffering) So I hope to find it a good home too he/she has a twisted foot but gets along just fine with the bigger ducks.

thanks! I didn't get photos of everyone but those are representatives. It's looking like I have 3 lav pullets. I was suspicious of one but I'm not seeing further signs so I'm thinking we might be safe. the chicks from you and Kirstie are soooo friendly. I had 7 of them fly up on my lap and shoulders all at once the other day.

Missy, garlic is very easy. You only plant the outer layers though so you most likely did not order too much. The inner layers you use as you wish. You only get 4 to 5 cloves you can plant. Plant the garlic in the fall, we plant it the first 2 weeks of October. Cover it with the manure from the coops and water it in. The garlic will start to grow underground until the hard frost comes so cover it with straw to protect the little shoots during winter. Lightly rake off the straw once it starts warming up again during the days, that's when we use the rototiller to till the garden along with the spring cleaning of the coop. Harvest the garlic once all of the tops have dried out completely. Leave the garlic outside to dry out and then store in a dry place until you are ready to use it. I always pull off the outer cloves just when I'm using the head and put them away in a container to plant in the fall.

Thanks Elizabeth and Missy on the ducks. I had to remove the heater I was using outside on the teenagers when I removed the new ducklings from Wynnie. I was so thankful having those 2 ducks in with the 3 chickens. Their second fat layer on the ducks kept the chickens all nice and warm.

I won't be able to go to the swap Sunday. My schedule has changed a lot and I'll be working.

Candy, John and I will be getting chicks from you anytime. We are extremely happy with them all. They are the sweetest, loving little chickens we have ever had. Of course we have only had chickens for over a year, but still they are the best. We want to replace all of the meanies in our flock with your hatching's. Just not all at once though. Once Lacey and Amanda are laying eggs then Martha and maybe Patty are out of here. I'm so glad those 2 are leaving the chickens alone but they won't leave Bella alone. Bella is very sweet now and there isn't a need for that at all.

My flock is getting really good Zen now. I am loving how they are getting along. One issue though is Monique. She is plucking the 1 year old chickens all of the time. I didn't realize it until I see her doing it and the freaking chickens just stand there and let her do it. There isn't an issue with protein, I'm using ACV but I did stop using the vitamins because of the ducks. I'm not sure if the ducks can have them?
