and only two years later, I am surprised I can remember the names of all 27 of my birds, PLUS the names of all of the ones I have lost. yeesh. scares me to think where ill be in another two years! and remember when we first moved into this place and i had ten birds? (hint it sounded something like this-"I just have way too many. I have some thining out to do.")

Moved my meaties out of the garage today to the grow out pen. They looked pretty shell shocked but I did see some of them eating and some drinking. I don't know if they will try to go into the coop tonight or not.

Did anyone check out the eclipse? I used one of my welding helmets - it was pretty interesting! I also tried to use the digital view port on my camera but it only came out looking like a normal sun, except.. The reflections all looked perfect in the pictures! Here's one from the annular phase:

whoaaaaa that looks super cool. We also used the welding helmet. Stupid clouds got in the way but it was alright because at one point the cloud was thin enough to catch the eclipse without the shades!

Leave it to a 5 year old to say whatever they're thinking! You'll be back to normal soon. Our garage is still a little stinky. I have a little more clean up to do with the empty brooders.

Mine is too, but I'm hoping not for long. I removed the brooder - actually just stuck it outside the back door of the garage and didn't clean it yet.

Thanks, Elizabeth. It was a good day. We didn't do anything huge, because I haven't been well lately. And on top of that, I got so sunburnt yesterday that I woke up pretty sick today. But we had a great dinner. Homemade ravioli, from-scratch sauce made with homegrown tomatoes, and heirloom Italian green beans. These all came from Sheryl, and boy were they tasty!!! The high point of the day was being able to share my plants with other people!!! It's a huge ego boost to hear how cool you are for raising something and giving it away. Lol. I hope everyone's gardens are very productive.

I planted the bush beans yesterday and today. I still have to transplant the eggplant, peppers, basil, and winter squash, then plant the pole beans and corn. And I have to plant Garden #3, but we plan to do that as a family tomorrow. The tomatoes, at least.

Elizabeth, did you count the total cockerels in the entire order? Including my hamburg cockerel, you might have more than the 10% of your sexed order, and might be able to get a bit of a refund. I can't tell yet if my silkie is a pullet or not. The naked neck has some red on its neck, but it's not on the comb or wattles... it's on an area that would normally be covered by feathers... so I don't know if that's indicative of anything. The only one that I can totally tell is a cockerel is the hamburg. He looks like he has a huge wad of cinnamon chewing gum on his forehead.

I'm so sorry about your girl. She was beautiful! I have tears in my eyes just looking at her. My mom was raised with Cockers and so I was raised with them. I love them. Never met my grandmother since she disappeared when my mom was 13, but I'd hear about her dogs and how great they were. My mom kind of kept up tradition, but never showed hers. Pups got shown though. We never had the blacks, but she sure wanted them.

cool photos, Ron! We watched it with our eclipse glasses. I tried photos but the camera couldn't capture it. i did get some cool photos of the shadows of the trees leaves.

glad it was a good day but sorry to hear you're not feeling well and a sunburn on top of it.

the seedlings i got from you are so healthy and awesome! You did a great job. I'm still disappointed about the failure of my tomato and pepper seedlings. they just stopped growing with tiny, tiny true leaves. oh well. I'll try again next year.

I don't think Ideal guarantees the 90% accuracy but it's worth a check on their website to see. I will post photos of my chicks this week. the speckled sussex and cochin are very obvious now. they are sporting big red combs and red wattles. still not sure on the brahama.

Oh, you are right, Missy. Ideal does refund the price difference between male and female if more than 10% of a sexed order of 25 pullets is male. But we only had 21 sexed pullets in the order. The silkies are straight run only and the ducks don't count and wouldn't help the numbers anyway. if we have 4 of the 21 cockerels that's 19% but we didn't order enough for the refund. Oh well. it doesn't add up to much.

Oh well, that stinks. If your sussex and cochin are obvious males, then at least that's good news for me. Mine aren't indicitave at ALL, so I think I'm in the clear. The only one with any red in his/her comb is the hamburg. I'm watching the brabanter really closely, because the general rule around here is that, if I really like it, it turns into a rooster. The brabanter roosters don't have big, noticeable combs under that shock of feathers on their heads, but their faces are BRIGHT red. Dijon's face is still black.

FINALLY. now that the extra boys are gone (and i miss them terribly!) and the last crumb of starter has been eaten...I have FINALLY integrated Gregory Peck, Brthday Present, Cupcake (the other polish that i bought from Sunny, hehehe, ((of whom also needed a birthday related name)), Pat (the androginous showgirl whos gender I just cannot seem to pinpoint), and the PERFECT showgirl whom I havent named yet but Im sure it will come, ... , . what was i talking about?...

oh yeah, so i finally integrated them with the rest of the flock! tonight i put them in the coop free from their pet carriers. I did have to give haircuts to birthday present and cupcake though, sorry Sunny. I wanted to make sure they would have perfect visability in the morning and this week and they will surely be shown their place by some of the lower pecking order chickens. While I was at it i gave Dolly Parton, our beautiful silkie a haircut also since she literally had 0 visability poor thing. shes SO fluffy. anyhow you all oughtaa see when you give birds like that haircuts for the first time. The WCBs and Dolly were walking around really taking in their surroundings, it was cute, lol. Anywhooo

Sunny have the polish perched yet? Because if they have then they sure are clumsy, hahahaha. theyll get it im certain. they were perched on one of the lower rungs when i finally got the gull to leave th coop. Gregory Pck had perched too and then got kicked off by the big girls. He was screaming for his showgirls by the time i left who were sleeping already in one of the nest boxes. AHHH, all is well in the chicken world.

Yes the girls perched here just fine but their perches here are very low. The tallest of the three roosts is only 2' high and the lowest one is only 12" off the floor of the coop so the height of the roost may be throwing them. They will figure it out shortly though, I'm sure. BTW, I loooove their new names!

Yesterday we did sell the WCB polish (well sold the girls and 1 boy and donated the rest to the poultry club) so that freed up half of the coop so all of Pam's babies are now out there as well. They are loving the new digs! I have to finally admit I have a lot of boys from that hatch too so they will have to go on Craigs list or something along with some of my gorgeous roos from Kim and Candy's babies. I will keep a few of them though for breeding. 1 lavender and 1 wheaten boy for sure.

Now the only birds inside are the first three FBCMs that I hatched from the new incubator (only 3 eggs were fertile and I was so surprised that all 3 of the new pullet eggs hatched) and the 2 hatches since (plus other additions to these hatches). All three of the marans I hatched first are girls!!! I'm so happy. But I let someone at the swap talk me into selling them two of them.

Why didn't I just say no? And why do I feel compelled to answer honestly when someone asks if I have any young pullets at home?!!

Anyway, I also added a few chicks to my newest hatched chicks. 3 lavender orps, an adorable frizzled standard sized cochin, and 2 penedesencas. So hope they are all girls! hahaha!

I wanna see pics of the girls with haircuts! I think we should give 1 polish a Mohawk just to see how it looks! mwahahahahahaha!

Yeah, almost two weeks ago we did the happy dance as the two littlest ducklings moved into their dog kennel, in my daughter's room. A week earlier, the littlest chicks had gone into the lower-level kennel as the 3 oldest ducks lived in the upper one. (I have to huge kennels, stacked one on top of the other.) With the big ducks in the coop, the little ducks moved out of the bathroom. We finally had the bathroom to ourselves, and had all babies isolated in one area, with no heat lamps.
But today, while I showed the babies to a friend's 5-year-old son, he asked, "Why does your house smell so disgusting?"

I had cleaned the brooders just yesterday! I'll be glad when they're ALL outside, and the inside is just humans and dogs. Much more control over poop that way.

Yea I still have that poopy smell in the house but it's much better with the bigger birds outside. I mean there is poop and then there's POOP!

Yep, I got 2 sussex and 2 cochins so I'm happy I have a pullet of each. I only ordered 1 brahma but that was an afterthought anyway so no big deal if it turns out to be a roo. Hopefully Dijon is a pullet.

congrats on your sales and new additions. I've seen the lav orps on craigslist. wonder if it's the same person. I bet those will be beautiful!
