Nevadans?

Lol! Sure, but you might find yourself doing more work. Ask my kids. They're convinced that I birthed them just to have slave labor.
Haha! That's what my brother, sister and I used to say about our mom!

There isn't a hilarious quote button! So like Seth said x2.

Elizabeth, I know you're heart broken right now and might even be blaming yourself but please don't. There are always reasons why these things happen. No matter what something else could have done it too. And thanks with the broody feelings. Sylvia almost took skin off today. It took almost an hour for her beak impression leave my hand today but there was no way she was going to sit on un fertilized eggs. I feel so sorry for broody's. To think they don't get up very often and Sierra is sitting in a hot coop to boot. I keep putting the sprinkler on the roof to help her out but boy does she run all over the place fast and a bit noisy but not enough for the neighbors to hear her and she looks so hot.

Sierra - I know people who live in Carson City and they have more than 8 chickens. As long as nobody turns you in that is. Luckily they have neighbors that love the free eggs so no one says a word to them.
I have one Ameraucana that I call "Tude" (as in attitude). She has been broody forever and pecks at me every time I reach under her for eggs. She's never left a mark though...

Sounds very interesting! I guess I need to explore Reno for some of the unique flavors I used to enjoy in the Bay Area. Missy I may need your help on that one! About the only unique stores I know about here are TJs and WholeFoods and I wasn't impressed with either one!
I would be very interested in this! I will be growing a ton of corn just because it grows better in large stands but have no idea what to do with it all!!!
I don't like TJs either but Whole Foods is okay - just pricey!

Yeah Missy, I completely agree with the inbreeding thing. I wouldn't go any further than what I have done. I'm not hatching any of Harmony's eggs because of them being just too closely related. It's okay to do it for just one generation but I don't think it would be a good idea to mate Mel with any of the harlequin's. He is nice though but of course all of the WH's are so calm and nice.

Okay, so with this intense searching for the correct feed, I got it figured out. My 1 YO chickens are molting but their feather picking for almost a year was pretty bad in itself. I couldn't figure it out. I had it correct except for the amino acids. I'm trying to find a feed for everyone with the proper amounts of the amino acids and not be expensive. I've been buying Purina Flock Raiser for almost a year now. The protein was their but the amino acids are not. I've been supplementing the greens and I know they can use cooked egg whites too so I'll be adding that as well until I can find a feed that's in the $14 range instead of the almost $20 per bag I've been paying. According to the Purina website their Flock Raiser is going up to $21.20 for a 50lb bag now. Can anyone help me with this? I'm looking for at least a 18% protein with close to a 1% Lysine and as close to .40% Methionine.
Did you check out any of the Farmer's Best?

Last year we found corn on the cob for 9 ears for $1. We bought 2 full boxes, then set them in my shower for a day until we were ready to process, since they were packed in ice. Then we had a husking/blanching/cutting/bagging line, and the whole family was involved. Even our adopted son (who is 25 years old.) I had towels spread everywhere, so when it was all done, I just rolled up the towels and shook them out over the chickens. I think we just used up the last of that corn, and it was just as sweet as late June, when we bought it.

It's so fun getting 2 or 3 people together to do it. The way my grandmother did! Next thing you know, the work is all done, and everyone had a blast.
So no hope for me on the adoption, eh?

Soooooo hot here! I've had ice cream for the past few days! Lol! I don't know if I could survive the summer without popsicles.

Ooooooh....Popsicles. What a fab idea. I have a chocolate panne cotta recipe from Sunset Magazine made with Greek yogurt that's, eh, so-so as far as panne cotta goes, but I bet it would make awesome fudgesicles. Thanks for the idea!

I used to love fudgesicles. The Artic Freeze Organge milkshakes at McDonolds are good they taste like creamsicles yummmmyyyy

The mark went away sorta fast. My skin is so thin from the meds I must take so it always looks worse than it really is.

We did check out the Farmer's Best but we only got to their layer's feed. I'm looking for a whole flock feed not layer's feed.

Ron, we would be happy to adopt you but you gotta work too!

My boys always told me I made them work too much until they were on their own. Now I tell me thank you for being my Mom and teaching me to be in the world. My youngest son asked me if we were poor. I would tell him no we are not. Then he would ask why can't I have what ever I want. I told him he had to earn everything he gets except for Holidays and Birthdays. When he got a job at a flea market the very first day he came home he was so sad. He said I didn't know people actually lived liked that Mom. They have no money. They can't afford clothes like we can. He had tears in his eyes when he was telling me. I then said, so are we poor and he said nope. I explained people do what they need to do to survive no matter what. You can't judge anyone for anything they do to survive as long as it's legal. He was very sad with the people in Iraq and how they lived. There are people who only live in the junkyard the whole time. The Army burns sections of the junkyard to keep it cleaned up. The people know what section will be burned on what days so they move their cardboard homes around so they don't get burned.

I guess I might as well stay here then. I have plenty of work for me right at home!

I just got finished adding a new brood super to my bee hive. They had already almost filled the first one - they were just starting work on the last frame in it. Of course, some room was taken up by the frame feeder. So they now have the frame they just started working on and the new one I put in in place of the feeder. And, of course, a whole new level now! They really are industrious - it's amazing what they've accomplished already. And there are definitely many more bees than I started with. Now whenever I opne the hive I see lots of juveniles.

Sheryl I just checked the Farmer's Best website and they do have other formulations but I don't know if any would suit your purposes.

Sure, we'll adopt you! Unlike our 25-year-old son, I think I can trust you to drive our truck without saying, "Not at night. Not when it's raining. Not when it's snowing. Not through construction. Not without a licensed adult. Not with my kids in the car." This poor child grew up as the only child of a VERY smothering Jewish mother in Brooklyn. Not only did he never learn life outside of his concrete world... he also never learned to get along with siblings, share with others, ride a bike, do a load of laundry, buy his own shoes, consider anyone's opinion but the one presented, why racist and sexist commente aren't ok... He's come a LONG way since he moved to Reno and I refused to let him in my house. And that's unlike me... but this guy was NOT someone that I wanted around my children. My husband patiently taught him what was expected from him socially in our house, and now I'm very glad to say that he's welcome over here just about whenever. It's his house that has Garden #2.

Sheryl, I was reading on one of the breed threads about someone who mixes flock raiser or game bird feed with layer feed. that bumps up the protein a bit but reduces the cost. You might do some calculations on that to see what you'd get. i bought farmer's best layer to feed my group. the younger pullets are old enough for layer now. I had been using flockraiser, either purina or nutrena and both were $19 something. it just gets so expensive. In the fall when my older group goes into molt, I may go back to flockraiser or game bird for awhile.

That's my problem with Whole Foods! Their prices are ridiculous!!! I can't bring myself to pay more for something than I know it's worth unless I absolutely have to. However when my DD brings me those fabulous flax and sesame seed crackers from there I don't say "No".

Woo hoo!!!

the chick ramp is safely secured to the porch. on the other side I just took the ramp down for now. they can hop up on the porch. I didn't get much accomplished this weekend but I did get the rest of my stuff planted including the potatoes from sunny in feed bags. It's my first time planting potatoes.

Here are a few photos of my chicks. these were taken 2 weeks ago but I just got around to posting.

Speckled sussex and cochin roos

dark Brahama. thinking it's a roo with the feathering, comb and posture

Laila with the runty silkie. It's the sweetest silkie.

one of the jaers

speckled sussex pullet

cochin pullet

a couple of silkies

I can see the roo-ishness in the sussex and cochin. It's kind of a relief that I'm not seeing any redness in any of the combs here yet, other than the hamburg. On the brahma, though... I agree on the posture, but the feathering really isn't any different from my girl. Maybe the picture is from the wrong angle, but I don't see much difference.

I'm looking at this thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/169790/brahma-thread/80 and thinking it's a pullet.

I'm hoping my naked neck isn't a roo. She has thick legs and stands differently, but has been built differently from the very beginning. No clue yet on the silkie. The brabanter is still looking like a pullet, but the roos don't have that much difference... just a lot of red in the face. She's very quirky, though, jumping all around.

My cochin is a lot lighter color than yours. I'm happy with that. She's a kind of a cross between a blue and a lavender.
