On a good note all but one of this hatches eggs have hatched and the last egg has pipped and hopefully will hatch soon. This is day 22 so my hatching incubator must have been running a bit cool. It is amazing that 10 of 11 shipped eggs made it to hatch, and they came all the way from Michigan.![]()
Here are some pictures of them.

Thanks for the pics Chickee! There's nothing like looking at cute little babies to cheer you up. What a wonderful hatch...10 of 11...that must be a record! We just had 1 out of 7 and thought it was pretty ok. I love all the support around here. Makes me feel all toasty inside.
That is odd about your tans, I wonder why? Thank you for today too.CUTE PICS!!!!![]()
Hey Elizabeth, I was just wondering around what time the clutch of pullets that the welsummer i got from you is in started laying? I hadnt even thought about her laying for some reason but today I got a very small darker speckled egg and realized that i wasnt even sure if she had been laying when i got her! I thought at first that maybe one of the olive eggers had started since the ameraucana looking one has been squatting for two weeks now until I remembered that I had her. Im so confused as to who lays what anymore. All i know is that darla lays my blue, midge lays my green, and baby lays my chocolate. I get a couple of tans (which is stupid because i have about 15-20 tan layers!) and whites everyday from the polish and leghorns....
Thanks Pam, I know you are really suffering more than I. And Candy, I have never heard of anyone having such a great hatch from shipped eggs. They are cute, now if only they were full flock. Those chicks are so cute! Awesome hatch on any eggs let alone shipped from so far!
They started laying in mid-late February although the welsummers probably started a little later. Their eggs are usually speckled and mostly a medium size. i have one who lays a larger size. So yours been laying quite a few months and maybe was just taking a break after the big move.CUTE PICS!!!!![]()

YAY!!!!! We missed you sooo much! I kept wondering where you were! Welcome back!!!Well I'm back. ATT "accidental" disconnected my Internet when they updated the local lines almost a month ago. Then they had the nerve to tell me I couldn't possibly get DSL out here. So after 3 weeks of calmly talking to them and explaining my issues to a different person every day I demanded to talk to the supervisors supervisor, and now I'm back up and running with their highest speed DSL for 19.99 a month (instead of $44).
So what have I missed? Other than my friends that is.
Of course! I'll do it right now (as soon as I hit submit).Sunny, can you PM me the info on the move--directions and time?
Well since I have felt for a very long time that we should be getting a lot more for our eggs I see this as very good news indeed! If all I did was sell eggs I would never be able to afford my chickens!Thank you Sunny & Elizabeth. If you go back a year and 1 month we are actually down over $15k. It's really hurting us. I really feel for you Elizabeth, getting funding is really hard to get now a days. Our economy really needs to get better again.
I don't know if anyone has been keeping up with the news? On May 21st a new bill was started in Congress. It will help us selling our eggs but the bakery's, restaurants and people buying eggs in the store is really going to hurt. The News Media is saying eggs can become $8.00 per dozen or even more. In the EU bakery's can't get eggs all of the time due to the shortage. The egg-laying shortage is from the battery caged hens being banned so the companies slaughtered the hens and went out of business.
I completely agree!!! Jeez we have some smart folks on here!!!I have been following this since I first heard a report about it on NPR last year. An interviewer had gone to an egg farmer that was in the process of switching over to the new way. In one ban, the birds were kept the old way. Each hen in a cage too small to allow them to stand and smaller in perimeter than a sheet of paper. They recorded a sound byte from the barn, it was almost silent.
In the next barn, the one that had switched to the new way, there were five hens in each large cage. Each cage had room for the hens to stand, stretch, lay, and each cage ha a perch and a nest box. In the sound byte for THIS barn the noise was enormous! Clucking and egg songs and very obviously happy hens. The farmer said the laying was just as good and the switch over wasn't too bad.
I consider this progress, but I am of the belief that our convenience in cOsumerism has gotten in the way of how we treat the living creatures that we feed On or that feed us. I don't really see how this switch over is a bad thing an I do think the news media trying to say that bakeries and egg prices will be threatened beyond repair is just the same plain old fear mongering that we always get from them when anything progresses. Just my thoughts.
I found it!Omg I just tried to find the "like" button on your post.
BRAVO!!! Very well put!!!Sorry about not getting the job, Sheryl. And your comment about how people can make it without making good money... HECK yeah! Tell me about it! This is our world, and has been for years. My husband and I currently have "good" jobs for the Reno area, and right now our combined monthlty income is about $1,000 less than what our gross living expenses should be for the month... rent, power, water, heat, fuel to work, and food. We cut out our TV 3 years ago, and now we're living a lifestyle that most of our friends treat with disdain, whether or not they realize they're doing it. We don't buy presents for people... we make them, trade for them, or give services. Of course you know that we raise a lot of our food, but our church also has really helped us out with that in times that the bills are just too high to buy a single food item. When we have no money to put in the gas talk, we walk for a few weeks... because we might not have money, but we have healthy feet. I have lost a few friends because our lifestyle is seen as trashy... people who don't drink or smoke, or take a welfare check, but still stop at thrift stores, or who might run to Walmart with garden dirt still on their jeans. People have finally stopped inviting me to Tupperware and Pampered Chef parties. I'd tell them, "I can't buy a thing, so I can't come." And they wouldn't believe me when I said I didn't have a dime to spend. Or they'd invite me out to go eat chicken wings, and I decline because I can't spare the cash for a meal. And they'd reply, "You HAVE to treat yourself once in awhile!"![]()
Ok... (wait a second, while I'm standing on my soapbox)... and this isn't directed at anyone here, but at those people who have dropped me as friends because they're tired of having me decline their offers. Do you think mothers in 3rd world countries argue that they deserve to treat themselves out to a night of chicken wings with the girls? Or do you think most of them are happy to finally rest at night, knowing that their kids are fed and healthy? What is wrong with "me time" being a half hour with a book, after the kids are in bed, their stomachs filled with healthy food? If that brings me such joy, please don't tell me that I'm not supposed to find joy in it. Which is one of the reasons we're in HEAVEN not having TV. Whether it's commercials, sitcoms of the "average American family" (which makes at least 30k a year more than we do), or reality shows... all of it can be used to suggest that someone's life isn't supposed to be happy without a certain lifestyle.
Ok... (stepping down from my soapbox)...
So I really feel for you about the reduced income. It royally stinks, and in retrospect you find amazing ways to compensate. Of course, there are all those panic attacks before you realize that you actually can make it... maybe not in a way that you envisioned, but you're still making it. And you're such an amazing and resourceful person, I know you can do it! You have such a large friend and family network, that they can help you out once in awhile. Maybe not financially, but maybe in agreeing to help you garden, or to meet someplace cheap for a get-together.

And about the egg industry... YES! That's wonderful, even if eggs will be more expensive. I'm really trying to educate myself right now on the value of food. And I can really, really see prices going up, especially with this weird growing season we're having already. People who know how to do things for themselves, like having backyard coops or gardens, are really going to be thankful they did. If they're not already.
So what did people do to pay for food when they didn't have feedlots, and all food was raised humanely? For starters, there were fewer people. They ate less. A lot of them supplemented with their own farms or gardens. They were a lot more conscious about what foods they spent their money on... steak was a privilege, not a right. These are all things that I remind myself of when I see soaring food prices. Everyone made sacrifices, and sometimes that involved eating entrail soup.
Quote: YAY!!! Sounds great!!! I'm making some ice cream right now but that will be a have to for the next time!
LOL!!! I agree. We've given up movies, TV, new books, we rarely go out to eat anymore, and even going to see the kids is down to once in a great while. But some things are sacred!!!sheryl maybe the cut wont be so bad? Last year I was making twice as much as I am now and working overtime and now i make half and dont get 40 hours a week most weeks and i swear it feels like just the same brokeness....maybe the universe finds a way of leveling things out for us. Were not NOT gonna make it, were all gonna be okaywere doers, us average citizens, and we always find a way to make it by. Youll be alright..you have us! and boy do we all know what its like to struggle :/![]()
On the other hand, Missy, youre right about the cable! Ive felt so free since we cut the cable cord! LOL. Now i seriously cannot imagine living like i used to...you know, on the couch. totally super love life even more without it.
weve done lots to save money, and have saved money just doing things to better ourselves. Quitting drinking and dieting were huge ways for us to save. Beer was costing AT LEAST $200 a month. AT LEAST. Plus eating out was costing us WAY more. not to mention turning off the cable and even canceling the registration and insurance on one car. Taking in a roomate saved us each 200 bucks a month, and we cancelled our gym memberships and just exercise outside. we both make about 12k a year (barristas rule!) so these things adding up to a few hundred a month in savings is really quite refreshing
Of course there are things i refuse to give up...like internet and hair dye, lol.![]()
JK folks, the kids are important too!!! Just gas is a WHOLE lot more expensive than hair color or internet.
Oh Pam this touched me sooo much! I was just telling Steve today how losing my Mom has made me appreciate and cherish the ones I love so much more!Sheryl, I'm so sorry about the job. I have been losing money for the last 3 years trying to save my businesses. My husband gets paid and that day it's gone and we're struggling to pay the bills. My egg money is the only money I'm making! But I know this economy has effected most everyone and I found out a friend of mine who is 53 was given 1-2 years to live. Her breast cancer came back all through her body so they'll try to keep her alive for a couple of years.......so I'm slapping myself upside the head, counting my blessings and praying for my friend.![]()
I know that because someone is worse off the ourselves doesn't make it any easier to get through the day or relieve the stress of trying to pay our bills but I try to remind myself that it could be worse.
Oh no!!! You aren't covered under John's insurance?!!Oh wow you guys! Missy, I love your soapbox stay on it. Aubrey, I always love your huge heart and brightness! Everyone is so inspiring. What people don't understand is John and I have been struggling since we got married. It's hard when you have family that believes a certain way other that what you believe. My boys never knew what cable tv was. We never had cable tv until we moved here and still it took us a while until he did get it and that's was only because basic was less than $10 per month. I prefer not to have cable tv but Nonni must have it. Her world turns around the tv. She can't get out at all on her own. She stays in her chair and gets up here and there. She can't read much because she is blind in 1 eye and has a hard time seeing in the other and she must have cable, it's her life. We will figure it out like we have every time. You are all great! Ron, I love what you've gone through and what you've accomplished as well.
My life style changes were mainly because of my health. I must figure out how to continue my remission while I'm without insurance as well. Cobra is out of the picture so I just don't know what to do there. John said there's no way I can go without Cobra but I just can't see paying almost $1,000 a month with this cut back.

So this is what I did find out today. They are looking for people who've never done the job before so they can mold them to what they want. I'm really good with that, it's how I was taught. I was molded into doing the concerts. I'm going to do my best that I can and that's all I can do. I read in the paper today about the new owners, it said no one lost their job and in fact they are hiring. Well, I know several people who will not be offered a job. Some were told they don't fit in. Some were told they make too much money and they can't afford them. Some were told you will be in an entry level position, that's all we have for you. If we don't take the job we will need to fight with unemployment because a list has been created and handed over to Corporate on who was offered a job and who wasn't. Corporate told us last year the new owners bought the company but they did not buy the employees. Everyone will need to reapply, if we did not reapply they would not fight anyone who did not stay and they can get unemployment, until today, we have heard differently. But rumors do go around until you hear it from the new owners mouths. That will be the day when we can actually talk to them again. They are not welcome much on the property until transfer time at the end of June.![]()
Thank you Tyler! No luck with the pics yet?Good luck with the move Sunny
As much as I hate egg farms I will never team up. Or work with HSUS.
