Wow! I would think Strombergs is too big to crap shoot breeding birds with a genetic problem. Can't be something that just popped up. If you had 2 out of 25 so far, that's a pretty unacceptable percentage. I'm so sorry.
Quote: Yes I would have thought so too! First they send me the wrong variety and now this! I'm afraid this has really soured me on the company at this point. I'd heard good things about them from 1 other person so I am wondering if they are under new management or something? New people that don't know crap about breeding chickens?!!
Unfortunately I have no way of knowing about all the birds. Julie what about the roos that went to auction? Did you notice anything up with them?
Hello everyone. I hope all is well with everyone. Sunny I noticed you posted you are moving??? Ae you leaving the place in red rock already? I know I am way out of the loop on this group. We have all been very busy around here. Our tobacco is almost completely planted, nearly 1800 plants total and we still have to go back to stagecoach and plant 300 more in a week.
We also got our first bee hive started and it is going strong. a couple of weeks ago we got a call from the fairgrounds about a swarm. it is now in our top bar hive.
we also still have two roosters we are looking for homes for. are there any swaps coming up. the neighbors are starting to say things about the crowing so I have to get them gone or slaughter them.
I am also considering selling the top bar beehive along with the bees. I wanted to mention it here before I list it on craigs list or something. $300 which includes the bees.
I have confirmed that the queen is laying and has a good pattern. she keeps everything the bees can build full of eggs.
I estimate 2 weeks at most for new brood to be emerging and the hive will be on it's way toward building up.
ten bars have comb started on them and they are making more at a quick pace. Stores of nectar and pollen are at the top of every bar. There is a problem in them getting the comb located where it is wanted. this is common with top bars and once they get a few combs in the right place you can use those to direct the building of the rest. I have made some adjustments already but more will be needed.
To give you all an idea of the value of this hive. the top bar alone is worth $275 and the bees are worth between $75 and $100. I am basically selling the top bar at it's value and a bit for moving it. the bees are being thrown in free to sweetin the deal.
I just paid $110 for bees from a guy in carson city and I had to go pick them up.
Anyway this is a good chance for someone that has been thinking about getting bees. sending me an e-mail is the best way to reach me. or PM me on this group. Don't post on this thread I never see all the posts.
Again I hope all is well with everyone. I have to get back to work.
Hi Daniel! Yes we are moving from the small house in Red Rock but only a mile or so down the road. This house is being sold and we are tired of having strangers traipse through our home and playing Real Estate Broker. The new house is also on 10 acres and is a long term rental so we should be set for awhile.
I am so tempted to get the bees but I am def still in the dreaming only phase. With everything on our plates right now there is no way we can take on another project! Plus I have no idea how to care for a hive and another chunk of time would need to be found to do this.
I really wish that lotto win would hurry and show up! That would solve quite a few of our problems right now.
sunny it is ok it was not your fault it was the hatcheries but she had the same leg deformaty as well
No, I know it's not my fault but it is not a good situation no matter what. I forgot about Dixie's leg having a problem as well as her neck.
Hi Daniel! I've been wondering where you've been. The only reason I'm able to post this often, with how busy we all are, is the close proximity to a computer between clients. You're gardening on several properties, aren't you? How are your kids doing?
Thinking about bees... I've been doing that. But that's as far as it's going here, just like the geese and turkeys that my husband wants. We're about at our max for homesteading hobbies on this property. But now that I've said that, I'll probably find something else we can manage to do in this tiny space. Lately I've been talking with my landlady on how I can cure cheese in this house. She thinks the crawlspace or the attic, depending on which season it is, in a rodent-proof container. Hmmm. But bees... yeah, I think I'd need at least an acre to fit them here. My neighbor two doors down has a small hive, and I have bees crawling all over my property. It's wonderful.
We finally canned all the cherries: 20 jars of pie filling and 20 jars of jam, with more cherries packed in the freezer. I had a 5-gallon bucket of them left, and a friend took them to one of her friends, who was delighted to get them. After this next client, I'm going to whip up some fresh mozzarella and pack it in pesto, then put it in a basket with some bread, apple butter, cherry jam, and fresh eggs, as a thank-you present for the friend who gave me the cherries. Plus, while picking them, I accidentally broke a branch on her tree, and I feel horrible about that. I was pulling down with three fingers! I can't be that strong to break a huge branch from a cherry tree with three fingers... it must have been a weak joint.
Wow you are just the canning queen! Are you making enough mozzarella to sell a bit? That sounds super yummy! Oh before I forget I need more soap! I should pm this but time is of the essence. I don't think I'm breaking any BYC rules if I don't mention any money or talk about the actual transaction details. Besides I'm buying. I think the rules are to stop folks from selling outside of the sale pages here.
Speaking of cherries... I know we can grow sour cherries here but I've been thinking about trying out a sweet cherry tree or 2. I'm just crazy about sweet cherries and I can get the trees pretty cheaply from Rain Tree Nursery. I may just take the gamble and order a tree to see how it does. Probably a silly idea in a rental but I really miss tree ripened fruit!
