That's the only way I've seen purple eggs. Darn BLOOM! Well hopefully I'll do it right this year. Starting to worry that I got rid of too many of those chicks that produced my lavender eggs. I sold hatching eggs and sold and gave away a lot of them and then the couple that I kept laid and shocked me. I feel like a lone freak with no one to compare eggs with. It's alway been so lonely being unique. hahahaha

Lol, I'm here!

I don't have a drip system, just automatic sprinklers with the little spray nozzels. I have a red mulch plastic that works great, and it has holes for the water to drain through. A drip system would be better, but it's a budget thing. Garden #2 just has straw over bare dirt, with squash/pumpkins as a natural mulch. I mentioned to my friend who rents Garden #2's property that a drip system would save a LOT of water for next year. He was talking about something that would save money while allowing him to run water to his swamp cooler at the same time, and that's what I recommended. But I'm doing what I call "ghetto gardening." You know, when you beg for old coffee grounds, use the scum from your pond, and make a complicated pole bean system with $5 worth of supplies from the Dollar Store.

I've had plans drawn out for a greywater system for about a year, and instructed my husband to build it. But he got busy and didn't do it. BUT... after seeing the water usage, he says he'll be sure to do it next year. And by "greywater" we don't mean a tank and pipes under the house... we mean a 55-gallon plastic barrel with a tap at the bottom, and Rubbermaid tubs with driplines attached to the bottom. $100, tops. Our washing machine is right up against the patio window, so we just have to run a hose out... put a bucket in the shower for warmup water... run our dishwashing water through a sieve... Easier said than done, when I can't get the family to turn off the faucet while brushing their teeth. But I can dream, right?
The swamp cooler would be a good idea. If we had more rain I would collect. I read a story about a person in OR who was collecting rain water and the county was trying to tell him he could not because the water was not his... REALLY?

So Missy what vegetables do you grow over the winter? It would be very hard for me to get water to anything, as I imagine it would for most unless your water lines are 2ft + under ground. We drain our watering system usually the first weekend of November.

I've heard of that happening in Pennsylvania as well! It's sparked an entire line of rain-collecting reservoirs that are disguised to look like other things. When I spoke with a good friend about my graywater idea, she advised that I be sure it's confined to the back yard because some cities consider waste water to be theirs because it would normally go right into the sewer then be reclaimed for their purposes. She lives in Montana and doesn't know Reno's particular rules (nor do I, really, on this situation) but is well-versed that practices like this can be ridiculously controlled.

This will be my first winter of planting vegetables. I'm going to do all leafy greens since they survive best under freezing conditions anyway. And it's going to have a hothouse with a little supplemental heat. So I can give tons of advice, but I haven't done it yet. I'm going to do lettuce, kale, spinach, and chard. Since our winters rarely ever get to 0 degrees, I think we can pull it off with the right props.

You could probably also do snow peas, but it would be difficult for me to make a support system for the vines, and have it be confined to my little makeshift hothouse.

14 pages of posts to go through!!! Sorry guys. My Dearest Hubby decided to try and boost the reception from our repeater and somehow lost what little connection I had. It is hooked back up now and the connection is weak but better than nothing. OK I will try to get through all these pages of posts but am only on page 1462 right now...

Thank you all for the sweet comments on the pea chicks. They are even cuter now since their crests are starting to come in. Too too cute!

Thanks Aubrey for giving an update on the puppies! It has been a crazy couple of months and an even crazier week!
That site is really cool Missy! Look at this one:
Ron love that shirt! I'll take one in red. hahaha
Hmmm...life is too short for mean chickens. Maybe you should hatch out a few replacements. They'd be breeding ready by Spring....

Just what I was thinking!
Greetings Nevadans!

New chicken keepers here from Reno, NV. Just found this regional thread and am so pleased to know there is an active chicken lovers group here in Nor. Nevada.

Hope you don't mind the re-post but this was from my earlier thread in the introductions forum:

Let me start by saying thank you to the BYC community for all your help so far. This forum has been an invaluable resource to us (my wife and myself). From tips to designing our coop, advice on dealing with 'pasty-butt, and much more, the BYC forum has provided great information and inspiration.

In May this year we took the plunge and brought home 8 beautiful chicks. We had considered chickens for several years and after reading many articles about the benefits of keeping chickens in publications like "Mother Earth News," "Hobby Farm Homes," etc. we couldn't resist anymore. My wife was initially the more enthusiastic on the venture but when I held the first chick in my hands I was hopelessly hooked.

Our Flock (so far):

Blue Silkie
Black Silkie
Blue-lace Red Wyandotte
Plymouth Barred Rock
White Cochin
Australorp
Buff Brahma
Buff Orpington (we got a Rooster, uh-oh)

Keeping chickens is much more satisfying than I expected. They are beautiful birds and their personalities are quite charming and unique. I find hanging out with them after a long day at work relaxing and soothing to frayed nerves. And while I eagerly await the first eggs I would be perfectly happy to keep them as pets if they never laid a one.

That's all for now and thanks again!

E and T
Hi E and T! Welcome to the Nevada thread!!!

I am very behind in my host duties. Because BYC changed their platform and we can't edit old posts anymore, I have to create a new page that we can have a mod post a link to in the first post. The new membership list will be placed there and I can add new folks to that page. Hopefully I can get to that soon! Anyway, love the new coop Ed!!!

I'm from Las Vegas Nevada I would like to be added to list. Would like to get to know some nevadans
Hi Cary! Welcome to the Nevada thread!!! You'll need to read the explanation above to get the scoop on new membership lists. We aren't allowed to update the same way anymore.
AWWW! Definitely need some pics! I love their names by the way, what breed are they?
German Shepherds. I will try to get pics loaded soon. They spend most of their time eating so it is hard to get a great pic.

From what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) Reno city ordinance doesn't prohibit any certain type of animal, as long as they aren't neglected nor are they a nuisance to your neighbors. (A guy one block over from me has 2 full-sized goats.) Since I only know the neighbors adjacent to me, on MUCH less than 3/4 acre, to me "no nuisance" means no roosters. Nobody has complained yet, but I don't want to have Animal Control at my door for a complaint made 4 houses over. There are others on this thread who have roosters within the city limits and haven't encountered any problems.

If you aren't within Reno limits, but technically in the county, you're allowed all the roosters you want. I've heard the only chicken restriction for the county is that you have to have a special ventilation for a huge number of chickens. What was the number... 10,000?
Yep if you have 10,000 or more you are required to get a special waste disposal system. I talked to an old timer here in Reno and he explained that law. Apparently, once upon a time, there was a large outfit in Northwest Reno that had many folks complaining... loudly. The ranch had way over the 10,000 mentioned and had no special waste system. It was a hardship the neighbors had to endure for way too long before it was finally dealt with when this law was passed.
