Nevadans?

Can you stack bales of hay/straw around the coop to insulate the noise?

Do you know if there are certain times of the day that they are bothered most? If its early morning, perhaps just letting them out later would be an option?

I was thinking about adding some insulation. I think blocking off the two big windows will help. I like having the ventilation but oh well. They are usually not too loud in the morning but the run is secure so I have been leaving the pop doors open 24/7 all summer. So maybe I should start closing those at night again and letting out around 8. hopefully they won't get mad and make more noise! . But really they are most noisy when they lay which is usually mid morning to mid afternoon. What I really want to do is pick up and move out to a more rural area but that won't be happening any time soon with our house under water.

Do you own your home? How on earth did you get under water? I haven't seen that many clouds come this way (east of you) unless they dumped all their water and disappeared.

Can you talk to those neighbors to find out the worst times for them?
Under water financially speaking! We bought at near the top of the housing bubble so we owe more than the house is worth.

Ok, just to preface...

I don't trust doctors. I might go to one for a diagnosis if I was having unmanageable problems but I would probably NOT accept treatment.
Reminds me of one of my favorite jokes:

Q: What is the difference between God and a doctor?

A: God doesn't think He is a doctor!

I find that when I do go to the doctor things work out much better when I do the diagnosing - it saves a lot of time anyway.

Ok, my chicken peeps. I have a crisis threatening my hobby. Jose was talking to the neighbor behind us today when there was a power outage and the neighbor mentioned that he and another neighbor behind are annoyed at the chicken noise but he wanted to talk to us first before taking it further. ( I always had a feeling that neighbor would be the one. He's retired and home all day, every day).

So I guess I will be reducing my flock and trying to keep the quietest ones. Also I will put in the plywood over the two big windows in the back--on hinges so I can open if needed. And think of other ways to reduce noise. Any ideas are much appreciated.

I have to do some research and see who are the quietest ones when they lay. I am very sad. Also, if anyone on here or you know of anyone looking to add to their flock, I will have some available shortly. The oldest are 1 year old and the rest are laying or point of lay. What are your quietest breeds? I know there is individual variation as well but it's good to know if someone has found some particular breeds to be quieter.

Oh NO! What a bummer! At least he spoke to you first. I constantly ask my neighbors to speak to me first if there's a problem, so the problem is easier to fix. We really, really hope we don't have to reduce our flock, but it's always a possibility.

Hmmm out of the ones I got from you, the quietest are the australorps and the barred rock. The orpington was very quiet, too. The welsummer and the wyandotte can get a little loud when they lay. My speckled sussex clucks a bit she lays, but she's so new at it that it's to be expected. So far, the brahma and cochin hardly make any noise at all.

I can ask around. Do you want to decide which ones you'll be keeping, before we start asking?

Well, I know there will be at least one welsummer in the bunch. love the eggs but they can be loud. my orpingtons are sometimes noisy. one is noisier than the other but i love them! One australorp can be noisy. My barred rock Gunda is loud but not all day. I don't really like my SLWs. I mean, I think the breed is pretty but I mine aren't so awesome in personality and they are kind of honky sounding like a goose. I will have to pay more attention to see who the worst offenders are. Maybe we'll go to church on saturday night so I can hang out and observe on sunday! Not really what I planned to do this weekend. Maybe I can set up a video camera

Missy are your ameraucanas loud? I haven't noticed mine being loud (hopefully that's true!).

I'm thinking about cheap ways to insulate. Maybe getting some insulation for the walls and covering it with tarps so the chickens don't eat it? It's expensive to put wood up again to cover the insulation.

well, my silkies are really quiet but of course they haven't started laying yet! OH, what a pain! I am sick about it. I guess that answers the question if I have too many chickens. Now this has really put a damper on my enjoyment of the chickens. boo hoo. I just want to gather up my chickens and run away to red rock! Ok, this pity party has to hit the road and grocery shop. Life must go on.

My EEs, OEs, Wellies and AMs are my loudest of my LF. You can just send that Wellie on down here to me. LOL

Sorry you're having problems with the neighbor. Even when I had no chickens, I loved to hear them. Sure beats the extremely loud music I deal with here.
