Nevadans?

Thanks everyone for the kind words of advice. I am well aware of the benefits of yogurt, which is why I feed it to my family regularly. However along with guava it's one of only two foods I'm allergic to. It causes my mouth to break out in sores instantly. So I'll be starting probiotics as soon as my prescription is out, but for now I'll just spend my days sleeping and feeling awful. Sigh.

On a much more entertaining note... one of my guineas has decided to go broody! shes been sitting on a pile of eggs for a week straight now, and she is a nasty aggressive thing. Which is good around here. The funny thing is half the eggs shes sitting are chicken eggs, she just decided to steal the pile one night. Luckily all my other girls just picked another horse stall to lay in. We collect eggs every day and all the eggs I've cracked lately are fertile according to the nifty little yolk ring trick. I suppose that's not really a surprise with twelve roos though lol. I'll keep everyone updated and post pics should anything exciting happen.

Oh Elizabeth, I'm so sorry! I would love to bring over Leroy to your house just for 1 week. He's crowing a lot now and he's loud. Your neighbor can complain and then let him know you took care of the problem and invite him over for dinner and let him know you're serving up FRESH chicken. Of course, I'll bring him home. I think your neighbor will have second thoughts after the visit from Leroy. Luckily no one cares around me, not even my mean neighbor. She's never home anymore so it's all good. When she was home it was always at night anyways and the chickens are in bed.

My super quiet never says a peep chicken is Monique. She does help the new layers though with an egg song until they get their eggs out and after a while she leaves once she knows they have the egg laying thing down. My Barred Rocks are the loudest of all. Martha sings to egg song to all the chickens and she sings herself when she's laying. She's super loud.

If you must get rid of any of them then I would like any Blue Laced Reds and/or Splashes so I can get my breeding program together next year but I'm praying you won't need to go there. I agree with SLW. I won't be getting anymore of those.

It's that time of year again, my chickens have worms. I found a spray that kills fly's and it worked for the first 3 months of this year. I didn't have any fly's until July. Now I'm having to spray every month and I still can't keep up with it. Missy I need some help with the coop if Joe has time and I will pay him. I need my run cleaned out badly. Please let me know if he can help me. I'm not allowed to do it anymore because of this stupid genetic disease I have. My doctor said I must absolutely stay away from all dust and chemicals. I can't even wear perfume anymore. I have another favor to ask too but I'll need to talk to you about that.

Hang in there Elizabeth!

Mandy, congratulations on your guinea. They are so ugly though but having them raise chickens sounds like a good way to protect those little ones from predators and such.

You have Tuesdays and Wednesdays off, right? Any other evenings? During the week, he can do Monday l or Tuesday after school. Then he goes back to his dad's for a few days and won't be home until Saturday night, but I MIGHT be able to get him a day early for a job. If you want him next Saturday, I can call my ex and see what I can work out. He's with us on Saturday the 29th, if you want to wait that long.

We don't like to avoid work on Sundays (but do it anyway) so tomorrow you can have him after 3pm. I won't be able to drive him there, though, because I also hired my husband out tomorrow and he'll have the truck.

Feel free to call me today. I'll be picking apples but I'll keep my phone in my pocket.

How do you know if a chicken has worms?

It might not just be the noise that the neighbor has a beef with, especially if he has a pool and bodies laying about. The first thing I noticed *before* I realized my next-door neighbor was harboring a soon-to-be-very-vocal roo was an increase in the population of flies in my backyard. And, yeah, the type of flies around a chicken coop -- not the bluebottlenoses or whatever the usual fly is here. They were getting into the house when the dogs would go out and we had to really up our flyswatting game. I have two dogs, but we clean up after them daily and so I know that wasn't the source of the insect explosion. The rest of my yard, to be quite frank, is something that could best be described as Mars.....Just pinkish desert soil, no plants, inhospitable to any living thing, bugs included. (We had contemplated landscaping, but then couldn't decide on what to put in and then decided ultimately we wanted to move and so why bother with the expense).

I realize that flies, unfortunately, are a part and parcel of any livestock keeping endeavor. But if the tranquility of your neighbor's yard is invaded by something more than occasional noise, then he has a valid point about nuisance and not being able to use his backyard for poolside activities.

I hope y'all can find some middleground that will satisfy everybody.

Well shoot, one of my new Marans chick isn't doing well. It's about half the size of the others (they're about 2 weeks) and I noticed yesterday morning, when they all got out of the brooder that there was a loose poo (the right color but just loose) and this one was lagging behind a bit. They were out all day yesterday and I brought them in again last night to keep them warm (didn't work out with the broody, I'll post about that later), but this morning I noticed this little one seemed to be less active. She is eating and drinking (I put vitamins and electrolytes in the water) but when I took them outside the others ran off to forage but this one stood there peeping loudly. I took it closer to its buds and it was walking like a drunk. I fed the rest of the animals but when I checked again it was keeping up with the group but you could see it was having a hard time. I brought it in the house and have it in my shirt because it was crying for its buddies.......and I hear clicking when it breaths. Not sure if it's just because it just drank or if its a respiratory thing. It's finally quieted down but still peeping on and off.

Any ideas whats wrong and suggestions on what to do? I'm going to get some Polyvisol (w/o iron) but should I start antibiotics?

My suggestion would be to feed her hard boiled crumbled egg yolks, baby food, and plain unsweetened yogurt. Keep putting vitamins and electrolytes in her water. Blueberries are anti-diarrheal, if you want to try that. Just chop up some frozen ones, you may have to force feed her one or two until she discovers they taste good.

Hope this helps

If you have a feed store close by that carries Denagard (tiamulin) 12.5% get some. I believe it only comes in a quart sized bottle... if you can find it smaller... great! Make phone calls - it saves gas because not all of them carry it.

You feed 1 ml/litre. Most measuring cups are marked in litres nowadays and if you have a syringe, they're marked in ml too. Makes it easier than trying to convert to cups and teaspoons.

Being respiratory, you can choose to cull or treat but it will carry it the rest of its life.

Hi guys, working on boards on hinges for the windows of the coop. grumpy neighbor is back in his yard moving rocks around or something. my girls are being very quiet, bless their hearts. Gunda laid and did the egg song. I threw some pumpkin muffin pieces in there and she quieted down quickly. (don't worry. I don't usually feed them baked goods. special occasion only) This neighbor has been relatively friendly in the past. So he's not in the worst category of neighbor. he just happens to be home all day which is unfortunate.

Pam, I hope your little marans chick will be okay.

Mandy, hope you continue to improve.

sheryl, lol on bringing leroy over here. I have had my share of roos over here but didn't keep them very long once they started. the BLRW are not loud that I've noticed yet. I really hope I don't have to get rid of those 2. they are so pretty. but if I do, I will let you know. Yes, I'd like to also know how you know if they have worms. I am planning to deworm my 1 year olds this fall anyway.

peep_show, he did not mention flies to my husband. He just mentioned noise. We do have our share of flies but I think egg song noise is his main issue.

ok back to work. i feel i have to tiptoe around my own yard, though.

ok here is picture of my new egg the one in the middle is the new one,the large egg is from my production red, and the darker small egg was my pullet egg from earlier in the week
