Never Before Heard Call in the Night.... Fox (wav. file). Update: Tracks Update2: Saw Fox!

I am in SC, Laurens county. We have seen several foxes in day light hours this summer. My neighbors have shot 2 of them in day light hours. I am still seeing foxes. The hens are not happy about staying cooped up because of the foxes. I am seriously contemplating a guard dog. I am thinking

Hello Cynthia,

We've had a lot of coyotes this year too in NE Alabama & they can get really loud at night. It is rumored there is a cougar / mountain lion in the area and people are missing some large dogs. I am missing one of my dogs. I've put out fliers & he is chipped.

Some nice fox videos (of them as pets or captive):

(this fox sits on command and plays fetch-the-ball)

Here is a couple of "Chuckles," a captive red fox:

Gee, Chris, I sure hope you get him back, that he wasn't a victim of a predator! I know coyotes take small dogs quite often, but if there are many large dogs missing, that doesn't sound like just coyotes.

Tim, we have had black bears in the n'hood around here, some have seen them. Someone poached one and I walked down into the n'hood and found the remaining hide down a deserted road near me after someone clued me in to it. Not surprised by bears or anything, but the mountain lion is something I've always believed was more widespread than the wildlife folks would admit, just not something I wanted to be found on my own piece of property. Makes walking to the coops at dusk a bit scarier, lol.

I am thinking a male Pyrenees will take care of the neighbor's dogs that won't stay home.

Our last dog passed away in 2012 and we really cannot afford another, but if we see too many predators, including human ones, I'm contemplating a GSD puppy to raise with the birds. Not much would get by a Shepherd. I think a GP might bark too much at night since I do live not far from two people.

I have heard from a local DNR friend that there are bobcats in the area, I'll have to ask about mountain lions. I have seen LGD as cheap as $100 on craigslist before. I have a large American Bulldog that does a decent job of keeping predators away, trouble is convincing him to stay outside at night when they are lurking around :p

Guess your bulldog knows he doesn't have enough hair to be safe from the grip of a predator, lol! Definitely have bobcats, but their tracks are much smaller than a cougar's. I've seen a bobcat near here.

But you have to feed them, provide routine medical care and gawd forbid if there's a medical emergency or catastrophic illness.
:( I lost a pup this year, first time I'm left with a pack of one.

which is why we cannot really afford a dog on our military pension, the unexpected medical stuff. And we do take care of our dogs, not like those around here who think if you put a collar on it (no tags, no rabies shots), you've done your duty. We do it right or not at all.

I don't think he's scared of much. He's a 115 pound tank. It's more of him being a big baby and wanting to stalk me at all hours lol. There is a definite expense with having dogs to guard your livestock. I'm afraid my puppy is going to off herself...she keeps eating and then throwing up large pieces of nonfood items like electrical tape, rubber ball, and styrofoam. Not to mention she likes to chase my poor chickens :p

I hear ya.....
