I lost my first chicken last night to a hawk, my lovely Rooster, Axl. He had been injured and I have been caring for him for months in the garage in a crate. He had finally started to get better and I was letting him outside for a few hours a day to regain his strength. He would go back in the garage at dusk and when I didn't find him, my husband found the mess of feathers.

I heard a hen make an alarm sound, but I didn't think to check on him.

I love Axl. I didn't realize how much until I found out he was gone. I am a complete mess. All I can think about is how much pain he experienced and I feel like a piece of my heart has been ripped out. I don't remember even being in this much pain when I put my last dog down.

I am planting a rose bush in his name with his feathers. My gosh, I have 8 other chickens, I can't imagine having to deal with this again. I know the only people that would truly understand are you all. He was family. He was my pal. He did a hell of a job taking care of his girls.

Please say a prayer for my dear "Axy-poo"

Thank you. I just wanted to get that out.

So sorry you lost him. They really worm their way into our hearts. I am sure he had a happy life with you.

:hugs :hugs

I’m so sorry for your loss, it’s clear he knew lots of love during his life and that’s all a chicken can ask for. I recently lost my rooster to wet pox and I cried all day, he was my very first chick and I loved him so much and still tear up thinking about him. :hugs

I am sorry for your loss .
It's never easy to lose someone you love . He was loved and well cared for. I will pray for you
