New Alaskan breeders coop - finally!!! (pics)

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

It is also freezing at the moment. Literally... 32.5°F at 9:18pm, and falling. Clear skies, so there's no warmth to be had.

As long as I can wear my flannel PJ's, fleece lined cowboy boot house slippers, and build a roaring fire in the fireplace i'll be fine....

Hey! I can cook us up a big pot of Texas (via Louisiana) Chili!!!

I do have one request though.... I have to ride a snow mobile at least once!

OH! And I want to ride a trash can lid down a *small* hill!

Yes, yes, no... we have a gas furnace... but you can build a huge bonfire outside! Yes, we would love some chili, yes, you can ride a snowmachine, and I think we can find you a small hill to slide down, but once you ride the snowmachine, you won't want to get on a trashcan lid...

We have trails all around, right from our front yard, so you're set.

Funny, you didn't look like a 14 year old kid in you picture...

I'm a 28 year old *man* (I use that term lightly because I still feel like a teenage boy) who has seen snow about 4 times in my life. Once in the 1980's when it snowed in South Louisiana and stuck to the ground for exactly 3.5 hours, which was just long enough to build a crude snowman in the front yard, and launch a snowball through the front door of my parents house. The other three times have been since I've lived here in the DFW metro area of Texas, and all of those have only been enough to make the ground white for a few hours.

But I realy do where flannel PJ's, and I really do have fleece lines cowboy boot house slippers....LOL

And I really would enjoy riding a trash can lid down a small hill, and a snowmobile would just be the STUFF!

You're like me... I grew up in So. Cal (San Diego) and it was always a treat to drive to the mountains to play in 6" of snow.

I've seen a lot here in the last 10 years here, and when I lived in Colorado, but it never gets old. I

We call 'em snowmachines up here... you'll get funny looks if you call them a "mobile"...

And they're addicting.

Well, if you're ever in the area, look us up!

I bought the water cups from the link you posted and plan to set it up in my coop. Let me know how they fare in the cold. I'm not in a hurry to set up the watering system this winter because I'm concerned of freezing even with some heat tape (of which I've got plenty). Once your coop has been through a few nights were it gets well below zero *inside* I'd love an update and pics of how you wrapped it all up. It would make things so much easier if I didn't have to refill their water in each of the individual pens. especially if I am going to be gone overnight. I try to keep things as simple as possible for people who help me out by taking care of the birds while I'm gone.

I have my outdoor sensor for the weather station in the bator right now tracking humidity (I love, love, love my new HB which has kept the temps absolutely steady), but it's going out to the coop when we move the babies in (if we ever get it finished that much. *sigh*)

I blame you entirely for posting these pics of your coop here--it's your fault I'm getting something similar on a smaller scale. i wouldn't have even thought of it without your bad influence. lol

I'm NOT sorry...

It's +25F right now, but still above freezing in the coop due to a couple of brooder lamps. I have the heat cables plugged in, but so far I don't know that it has kicked on yet. I just can't wait until all the chicks are grown so I don't have to worry about them.

I'm just extremely happy that the mud solidified in the layer pen.

I'm hoping that the cloudy weather holds through the winter... more snow and warmer temps. But we're on day 3 of clear skies, and it's getting colder and colder.

I'll try to get some update photos today.

I'd like to see your coop, Heather!

No worries... they'll be warm.

There's 13 of the greenies still in the bator, and one under the broody. Plus, the silkie egg is developing, and I still have the two marans crosses in there. Hard to see, but I think there's something going on in them!!!

And it isn't "cold" yet... wait until Jan/Feb when it's -30F and never climbs above 0F.

THAT's when I start questioning my sanity and decision to move up here...

OMG Tori!! What an awesome coop you built!!

Oh would you mind terribly if I convince hubby that I need to build one like it and work off your plans?!?

Your little grandchickies that will be hatching out here deserve something that wonderful, right?!
