Hello all,
My wife and I are interested in starting to raise our own chickens. We live in the city and have enough property to raise up to 8. We think we want 3 to start with. So looking for help choosing breeds and where to buy them. Seems our last hatchery closed down a bit ago, so I am unsure how we can get some chicks to raise. Not sure how well "mail order" all the way to here would do. Any suggestions on breeds, where to get them, winter housing and any advice is welcome.

Thanks
Chris

Your best bet would be to go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum to find and post on your state thread. We have many Alaskans on here and they would know best what breeds and housing you need to get your flock through extreme weather conditions.

Also you may find someone with birds near you and not have to worry about shipping problems. Best of luck - hope you will update after you get some birds, so we know how you are doing.

Welcome to BYC! Drumstick diva has given you a good link. Another link you should check out is Alaska Backyard Chickens at http://akchickens.org/getting-started/recommended-breeds/ If your looking for personal recommendations, I would recommend Black Australorps. They are extremely cold hardy birds, and the best layers of the standard brown egg laying breeds. I have raised them where the winter temperature dipped to 30 F below zero, and with a dry, draft free coop, they did just fine. They are one of the breeds recommended for Alaska on the previous link I gave you. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

You might want to start in your state thread to chat with your chicken neighbors to see what breeds do well in your area and how they survive your brutal winters...

Here are a couple of breeds pages that have some quick info on each breed and their attributes....

So glad you could join our community and welcome to our flock!

Hello SigCorps. Very interesting moniker. It seems like our members have given you some great advice on raising your chickens so I would just like to say welcome to BYC. Enjoy the site. I am going to make an assumption here that you are either active duty army or retired army. Thanks for your service to our country. I spent a few months near Anchorage in 1979 ( Ft. Richardson ). Absolutely beautiful country up there. Welcome again from the lower 48.
