My girls were born on Mother's Day, and I had no idea how much I would fall in love with them!! They make me giggle every single day! To start, I only got 3 chicks because I wasn't sure how to take care of them and I wanted to learn slowly and be a good "mommy!" Well, I have fallen in love and ordered more!!!

I have 2 Barred Rocks and 1 Cherry Egger. The ones I've ordered (from a friend) are Silkies. So I'll get 3 more hens and 1 rooster.

My husband said I'm not allowed to get one more thing that eats food! Hahahaha! I have 3 cats, 2 horses, 1 donkey, and now 3 Chickens (soon to be 7)! What he doesn't know is I still want a dog!! hahahahaha! That will be something I'll have to figure out: how to teach the dog that the chickens are part of the family. But that is far down the road.

Anyway, I'm SO GLAD to have a site like this where I can LEARN and ask questions!!!

Happy Clucking!

Welcome to BYC, Eadie! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I'm so glad to hear you are enjoying your flock! My girls always make me giggle too! They are just so entertaining and funny. Good luck with the ones you've just ordered. Definitely check out this link on introducing new birds to the already established flock https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/introducing-new-chickens-using-the-see-but-don-t-touch-method

Sounds like you have a nice variety of other animals too! I love the horse in your avatar. Very pretty!

Glad you joined us! Feel free to ask any questions.

Thank you so much!!!!!! Yes, I will check out that link (thank you!), and my friend who is giving me the silkies says she will also advise me. Thank goodness there are so many wonderful people who can guide me along!!

I just read the article and felt good about it because you have to do horses the same way. However, I became concerned toward the end of the article when it said different breeds don't always get along. Silkies are smaller than Barred Rocks and Cherry Eggers, right? Am I asking for trouble? Should I stick with the breeds I already have?

Silkies are definitely different looking from barred rocks and cherry eggers. So you might have a harder time introducing them, yes. How old will the silkies be? Older or younger than the birds you have already? If they are older, I wouldn't be AS concerned.

My friend has both and it's my choice, so I should get older ones ? They are older, but not old enough to lay yet. Is that good?
