Hello there I'm a new chicken owner, I currently have 12 fully grown and laying hens who are great. I tried raising chicks last year but all of them died, so we bought fully grown chickens. Now it's spring and we have 10 Rhode island red chicks, 5 red ranger chicks, and 5 golden prides babies as well as 4 turkey pulllets (rir and turkeys are about the same age 5weeks I think). So far they are doing well and no deaths, rir have almost all their feathers and live with the turkeys :)

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Do you know what killed your first batch of chicks?[/

I think it was the cold but I'm not too sure, I had 12 Americanas (not sure about spelling) Who were fully feathered and living in the coop but still pretty small. I think they were about 7weeks old or older, they were perfectly happy and acting normal the night before and the next morning when I went to feed them they were all dead in different nesting boxes (it was early fall). I had a few who died about a week old with watery eyes and lack of energy. :(

Some folks feel it is better not to raise chickens with turkeys. 1) a tom turkey sometimes tries to breed a chicken hen and kills her or badly maims her in doing so.
2) some feel chickens can spread black head disease to turkeys

Wow they try to breed with chickens?! O.O I do not want that to happen. Yikes... Do you know about what age this happens? My birds are still pretty small but I don't want to lose any of them.
I'm hoping to have a separate coop for my turkeys this summer but if they Breed young I'll build them one sooner.
I've heard about the black head, but as far as I know there are no out breaks in my area. I'm honestly at a loss with the turkeys, as new as I am with chickens I'm clueless about turkeys. I was planning to fence them in their own area.

Sorry to hear you lost your first flock :hugs Hope things go a lot better this time. Good choice to keep the turkeys separate later on, but you might want to make sure you've adjusted the feed among all 3 types of chicks (layer, broiler & turkey). Here's a link to a recent thread about chicks and poults together: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...-advice-is-appreciated.1299464/#post-21157702

Be sure to visit the turkey forum and meat birds for Red Ranger advice and ask any questions you may have.

Best wishes with all your flocks!
