I can't answer your question, but I'd be more inclined to increase their protein intake, if you wish to add to their feed.

The fat content in suet cakes can be pretty high so I don't feed them to my chickens. There are treat cakes formulated for chickens, like these:

Some people prefer to make their own. If you do a search for homemade flock block recipes here on BYC, some posts should come up about it.
