New baby chicks from local feedstore......

Giants?

I dunno. They haven't any spots on their heads, so I'm ruling out Barred Rocks.

Maybe Black Australorps.but the bottoms of their feet are sorta yellow as you would expect with Jersey Black Giants.

I guess I'll just find out when they GROW up.

They all seem very healthy so far.

I'm jealous, no one's had chicks around here lately. Um, maybe I should say "healthy chicks." We found someone a few weeks ago but they didn't look so good so we passed. That's okay, we finally caved in and ordered some from a hatchery. It was our first experience to have chicks mailed to us and it worked out fine.

Beautiful chicks you have there, and I like your set-up. Ours are in the laundry room--which is fine since they're so tiny right now but it's going to get very crowded very quickly with 20 of them.

Hi Chickachickadoo !

The feedstore where I bought the chicks gets them from Privett Hatchery in Portales, New Mexico. Privett's website leaves a LOT to be desired, but they have a good reputation as a hatchery.

Not sure, but I think Welp Hatchery gets some of their chicks from Privett, also.

My "brooding area" was a cheap way to go. I was given the "igloo" and I had some old chain-link and chicken wire, and an old gate. The fence posts are just 5/8 rebar driven into the ground with a 2 lb. (small) sledge-hammer. The fencing is attached with "baling wire".

Seems to be working fine. The chicks have never been in the house, just in the yard. But, apparently the 250 Watt heat lamp is providing sufficient heat for them. They huddle together at night, but not directly under the lamp.....so they must be warm enough.
