I am new to raising chickens, although not new to raising farm animals. I have a horse, 6 rabbits, 4 chihuahuas, and a pug. I have also raised cattle and chickens years ago. I was in 4-H as a kid. Now I want to raise have laying hens so that my 5 year old daughter can have experience raising animals and showing her chickens at the fair.
We bought female (I hope) chicks over the weekend. I have 6 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Easter Eggers, 2 Blue polish and 2 Dominique. I have them in my garage now. ^ are in a small portable dog run and 6 are in a kennel cage. Each has a heat lamp and they are doing great.
Now I need to get going on the coop. I know those chickens will be big and stinking up the garage in no time as the weather gets nicer. I live in Southern MD. It was 74 yesterday and 34 today!!! Crazy.
I have already found this website really useful and I have 2 friends at work that raise chickens too. By the way I am a biology teacher and I love being outside!
