Yep, I just joined up and wanted to say howdy to the gang here. I'm looking to raise something in my backyard (in city limits) that will provide eggs and meat for my family and I. Chickens are too noisy and cannot have any roosters in town. Was thinking of pigeons, quail, chukar, dove....etc. Already have a fresh built outdoor pen/hutch out in the backyard that I am trying to finish out. Have the top section set up with a feeder and auto watering. Just need the birds! May also get rabbits too but it's coming up the wrong time of year to raise them as it's gonna be hot here in Texas. Any suggestions? Was really hoping to try some Texas Pioneer pigeons but haven't found any yet.
and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your project, looks like TwoCrows has given you some nice links to get you started in your search! You might also try the Texas thread in case someone local knows where to get the birds you are looking for
I'm tempted to go with pigeons and quail but not sure about that. Also considering rabbits thrown into the mix too! Not really mixing them, just having them around. I think I'll start with the pigeons to begin with then see how that works for me. Can't hurt to add a cage or two of quail to try them out but the rabbits may have to wait as it's beginning to warm up around here.
