Hello BackYard Chicken Community!

New to chickens, just picked up my 7 Barred Plymouth Rock Chicks. They are so cute. I live in a wooded area on 2 acres that is mostly cleared but we definitely have raccoons around. Still working on raccoon-proofing my coop but have a few weeks to reinforce. Found BYC and thought I would join since I have a lot to learn. I have a large, fenced vegetable garden, planted a small orchard and was hoping my girls, once they grow up, will be able to range the cleared acre during the day and stay out of my wooded Hosta garden (hoping). Looking forward to learning a lot and meeting some new friends!

Nice. This is one of my birds, who has unusually short wings. Her name’s Lightning. Have you named your chickens yet?

I named the two that I can tell apart. Little Beak, because she and her beak are so much smaller than the rest of the chicks. USPS called me this morning at 6:45 to tell me the chicks were here. I rushed to pick them up. After a bit, they had all taken a drink and eaten, except for Little Beak. She was lethargic, just sat there and did not eat or drink, even after I wetted her beak. I thought she might be dying. After about an hour, they had all settled in and fell asleep, for longer than I thought. But when they got up and started doing chick things, Little Beak had perked up and eventually, I saw her drink. The other one I named Hawk, because truthfully, her eyes and beak look bigger and lighter than the others, and she is bigger. Hopefully, the name is not a bad omen. The others, I can't tell apart yet. I like the name Lightning.
