Hi I’ve just got 4 Cochins 3 off them are 6 months old one is 12 months ,and she is moulting I’ve had them a week now !
and I’ve got two , buff Opingtons there 7 months old , I’ve now had them 3 days , there in separate pens at the moment,
The thing is I’ve not yet , had a egg from either off them , is that cause they have moved location or are they two young ? The 12 month old is the oldest .
the lady I got them off, said she was laying does it take a while for chickens to settle in a new place before they lay or is it the weather ? it’s getting a bit dark and cold at the moment .
I’ve had six chicken just mixed breeds ,
they were 6 months when I got them , in may this year , and have been laying loads every day from day one , and still are,, even though it’s getting dark out and cold!
out off the 6 hens I usually get 4 to 5 a day sometimes 6 thanks much appreciated for any feed back on this thanks

I wouldn't worry at the moment. My hens are ex-batts, however in the dark and cold they lay less. Also, them being moved probably was very stressful. They may start laying when they settle in. Why are you seperating the buffs if they came from the same place?

Do you know if they are even laying yet? And since you just got them it’s unlikely for them to start laying immediately. It may take a few days to a few weeks.

You might also want to give them time to get use to the new home.

Thanks no I got the Cochins from a different place a week ago the three days ago my friend gave me two buff Orpington’s there from different homes so quarantined them separately just incase there was any infections crossed thanks for your feed back

As others mentioned moving is stressful, so even if they were laying at their former home they'll be off schedule for a couple of weeks while they adjust.

Shortening daylight hours may also be affecting them hand in hand with moving stress, but since most of the birds are under a year old it's likely some will resume laying this season.

As far as I know hens do not lay when in molt, right? So that might explain that one. I have two Cochins and they just started laying at around 6 months, so you may just need to wait a little bit. Otherwise it could just be stress or if they aren't in a run they could be laying in a secret hiding place. You might want to ensure they are getting enough calcium as well--sometimes even with a layer feed your hens will want more.
