So I have my first broody hen, she is a first time momma. She did great, was really devoted and everything went smooth. I realized I may have made a rookie mistake in the beginning she had been broody and I decided to go with it. I gave her 5 eggs and 24 hours later gave her 3 more. Google assured me it didn't matter
. Maybe it didn't
by hatch I had 5 viable eggs. l was positive about 4. One of them I wasn't sure. So at 21 days 2 hatched from the 1st nights batch and 1 was piped from when I added on the second night. The next afternoon nothing was happening with the two remaining eggs but it was day 21 for them so I wasn't too worried. When I came home from work she had left the nest I tried putting her back in and her babies followed they are in a small space for now. She would stay for 5 minutes and then get back off and would not return. I don't know how long she had been off the eggs by the time I got home from work the eggs felt a little warmer than room air. So I candled them, one was definitely not right and smelled so I got rid of it the other one had movement and seemed good, I felt like it was a little small maybe day 19ish. So I put it in an incubator close to her.
Could it be it needs extra time if she wasn't sitting yesterday?
Can I add it to the hen if it's a few days younger than the others?
Yesterday I went out after I put her back on the nest and one of the chicks was dead.
It's intestines and some yoke were out of a very small area in its low stomach. It seemed ok a little while earlier. I lean toward her not killing it purposely since she is very good with the remaining 2. Maybe from moving them back or she did it on accident.
On the forum do you start a new thread with each new situation or do you just keep adding to your first one? I am new.
