I am loving learning all about my daughters chickens, my grand chickens.
Unfortunately my daughter went out this afternoon to find her chickens breathing with their mouth open and seemed to be panting. We are sure if they are overheated as this is the hottest day we have had so far, or if they got something from the grass while in their outdoor pen yesterday (for about 3 hours and we were with them). It seems strange that they all were doing this at the same time.
We have an an avian vet who will visit only Tuesday through Thursday so we are pretty anxious while waiting.
We put ice in their water to cook them if this is overheating. They are lying down more now but still have their mouths although maybe not as much and they are still eating.
Any thoughts?

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

If they are all doing it, they are hot and panting to cool themselves off.

If you can offer a shallow tote with ice water in it, blow a floor fan across the run and make sure they have LOTS of deep shade, they can cope. When it gets so hot that I see my flock panting on the roost at lock up, I will give them electrolytes in their mash the next morning to help them deal with the stress. If we are in a heat wave that will last for days, they get electrolytes every three days until the heat breaks.

Welcome to BYC.
Mine love mud when its hot (that's about 6 months out of the year here).
I just dump ice and water in a low spot, under a tree. Sometimes I sprinkle a few meal worms. They cool off by digging and laying in the mud. I also have fans in my runs and plastic kitty litter pans with water in them. They like to stand in those. Like @DobieLover I give mine electrolytes.
